Skinhead ถือกำเนิดในอังกฤษช่วงยุค 1969 ซึ่งรับเอาอิทธิพลมาจากสไตล์ของพวก Mod และพวก Jamaican, Rudeboy ซึ่งก็คือพวกที่ชอบขี่รถเวสป้า ( หรือรถสกู๊ตเตอร์ ) พวกชอบฟังเพลงสกาและเร็กเก้ อาจจะพบเจอ Skinhead ได้ในบริเวณสนามฟุตบอลที่มีคนตีกันหรือในสถานที่ที่เกิดความรุนแรงในหมู่ฝูงชน บางพวกก็ไล่ตีพวกคนเอเชีย หรือไม่ก็พวกเกย์ ฯลฯ นี่คือยุคแรกของคำว่าสกินเฮด





ยุคต่อมาคือในช่วงปลายยุค 70’S ไปจนถึง ต้นปี 80’S ซี่งเป็นยุคที่ดนตรีพังค์ได้เริ่มก่อกำเนิดขึ้นมาและมีอิทธิพลอย่างมากกับพวก Skinhead ก็ได้เริ่มมีการนำเอาดนตรีสกามาผสมผสานกับดนตรีพังค์ ซึ่งผลลัพธ์ที่ได้ก็ออกมาในรูปแบบของวง Madness, Selecter and The Specials เป็นต้น


เพลงพังค์ที่เป็นยุคของพวกสกินเฮด ที่เรารู้จักดีก็คือแนว Oi! มาจากนักแต่งเพลงชื่อว่า Gary Bushell ( เป็นนักหนังสือพิมพ์ The Sun ด้วย ) Oi! มาจากภาษา Cockney เป็นคำอุทานซึ่งถูกนำไปใช้ในเพลงของวง Cockney Rejects ซึ่งเป็นวงระดับต้นๆของดนตรีในแนว Oi!ซึ่งดนตรีในแนวนี้นั้นมันถูกสร้างขึ้นมาเพื่อเป็นการตอบสนองของพวกชนชั้นกรรมาชีพที่ต่อต้านพวกที่ทำลายหรือว่าย่ำยี Punk scene


วง Oi! ที่เด่นๆคือ The Oppressed, The Business, Sham69, Cock Sparrer, Blitz, Last Resort, Condemned84 and Combat84


Skinhead เป็นส่วนหนึ่งใน Punk scene ในอเมริกาในช่วงกลางยุค 80’S อเมริกันสกินเฮดจะเป็นสไตล์เพลงที่แตกต่างออกไปกล่าวคือ มีการผสมผสานแนวดนตรีแบบใหม่ในยุคนั้นที่เรียกว่า NewYork Hardcore ( NYHC ) วงที่รู้จักกันดีก็คือ Warzone and Agnostic Front, ส่วนวง American Oi! Bands เช่น Anti-Heros, Iron Cross, Stormwatch, Templars, Dropkick Murphys, Niblick Henbane, andPatriot หรือว่าเป็นดนตรีสกาคลื่นลูกที่สามหรือที่เรียกว่า Third wave ยกตัวอย่างเช่นวง Toasters,Pietasters ฯลฯ


การรวมกันของ สกินเฮด และลัทธิการเหยียดผิว เริ่มขึ้นในอังกฤษ โดยส่วนมากจะเป็นพวก แฟนบอลฮูลิแกน ( กองเชียร์ทีมฟุตบอลที่มักจะมีเรื่องทะเลาะวิวาทหรือทำร้ายร่างกายกัน ) ซึ่งจะมีบางส่วนที่เป็นสกินเฮด และด้วยการสนับสนุนจากวงที่โด่งดังคือ Skrewdriver ในยุคแรกนั้นวงนี้ยังไม่ได้มีความคิดเห็นในเรื่องการเมืองมากมายนัก แต่หลังจากที่คบหาเพื่อนที่เป็นสกินเฮดซึ่งมีความคิดคลั่งใคล้ในลัทธิชาตินิยม ความคิดของทางวงจึงเปลี่ยนไป พวกลัทธิชาตินิยม คือ พวกอารยันผิวขาวซึ่งมีทั้งในฝั่งอังกฤษและฝั่งอเมริกา ซึ่งในอเมริกานั้นมีการรวมตัวกันของพวกลัทธิชาตินิยมพวกนี้และประสพความสำเร็จในอเมริกาเหนือ ส่วนมากพวกนี้จะโกนหัวและเลียนแบบการแต่งตัวของพวกสกินเฮด





สกินเฮดส่วนมากไม่เห็นด้วยและได้เริ่มมีการตอบโต้ โดยมันได้เริ่มต้นขึ้นในปลายยุค 80’S จนถึงต้นยุค 90’S ซึ่งได้มีการก่อตั้งกลุ่ม SHARP ( Skin Heads Against Racial Prejudice ) และพวก RASH ( Red and Anarchist Skin Heads ) เพื่อที่จะต่อสู้กับลัทธิชาตินิยมการเหยียดสีผิวและขับไล่พวก นาซีและเพื่อแสดงให้เห็นถึงความแตกต่างระหว่างวัฒนธรรมสกินเฮดในแบบดั้งเดิม( Traditional Skinheads ) ซึ่งเป็นกลุ่มที่ไม่ยึดติดเรื่องการเหยียดสีผิว กับพวกนาซี หรือที่เรียกอีกอย่างนึงว่า ” Boneheads ”


ความรุนแรงในสังคมพวกสกินเฮด บางพวกยึดถือและซีเรียสในเรื่องการเมืองบางพวกเฉยๆกับเรื่องพวกนี้ ทำให้ในบางผับวงสกินเฮดถูกแบนไม่ให้เล่นเนื่องจากมีการทะเลาะวิวาทกันเป็นประจำในเรื่องของทัศนคติความเชื่อถือในเรื่องราวที่แตกต่างกันแล้วก็ระหว่างกลุ่มที่ต่อต้านนาซีและพวกนาซี


แต่ภาพพจน์ของพวกนาซีก็ตกต่ำลงเรื่อยๆโดยพวกสื่อต่าง ๆแต่พวกสื่อกลับไม่ได้แสดงให้เห็นถึงกลุ่มสกินเฮดที่ต่อต้านพวกนาซี ซึ่งนี่ก็คือผลเสียที่ทำให้คนเข้าใจผิดและคิดว่า สกินเฮดเป็นพวกนาซี ไม่มีอะไรแสดงให้เห็นว่าสกินเฮดคนนั้นมีความคิดเรื่องการเมืองหรือไม่จนกว่าเราจะเห็น Patch ( บ้านเราเรียกว่าอาร์มหรือป้าย ) ที่นำมาติดบนแจ๊คเก๊ต Flight ของคน ๆนั้น และความเชื่อโง่ๆเรื่องสีเชือกที่ผูกบูทและสายเอี๊ยมความจริงแล้วมันไม่ได้มีความหมายหรือความต้องการสื่อสารอะไรเลย





ลืมเรื่องที่ได้คุณยินมาผิดๆเกี่ยวกับสกินเฮดเสียที สกินเฮดไม่ได้มีอะไรแตกต่างจากคนธรรมดามากมายนัก มันก็แค่ Beer, Brotherhood, Oi and Ska แต่ก้อมีพวกสกินเฮดบางคนที่เป็น Straightedge คงจะรู้กันดีนะว่า Straightedge คืออะไร และโดยทั่วไปแล้ว การเหยียดสีผิว และการเมืองไม่ใช่ส่วนหนึ่งของวัฒนธรรมสกินเฮด

D = Discharge
Beat = Beat, Drum discharge style


ดีบีท คือ ดนตรีฮาร์ดคอร์พั้งค์สาขาหนึ่งที่ได้รับความนิยมในวงกว้างเช่นเดียวกับฮาร์ดคอร์พั้งค์และครัสต์ จุดเริ่มต้นของดนตรีในแบบฉบับที่เรียกว่า ” ดีบีท ” นั้นเริ่มขึ้นมาจากวง Discharge วงดนตรีฮาร์ดคอร์พั้งค์จากอังกฤษ อิทธิพลของ Discharge นั้น มีค่อนข้างมากในแวดวงพั้งค์ ในยุค 80’S และมันยังส่งอิทธิพลสู่วงดนตรีพั้งค์ทั่วโลก ( เหมือน Ramone, Sex pistols, The exploited ฯลฯ ) ต่อมาวงดนตรีพั้งค์ในประเทศต่าง ๆก็ได้รับเอาอิทธิพลของวง Discharge ไปใช้ในดนตรีของตัวเองอีกทอดหนึ่ง

แต่โดยหลักแล้วนั้นประเทศที่รับเอาอิทธิพลของ Discharge ไปใช้แล้วมีลักษณ์เฉพาะตัวของตัวเองและได้รับความนิยมในวงกว้างนั้นหลัก ๆแล้วจะมีอยู่สามประเทศด้วยกันคือ สวีเดน, ฟินแลนด์ และญี่ปุ่น ( Swedish, Finish, Japancore ) แต่ก็ใช่ว่าวงอย่าง Discharge วงเดียวเท่านั้นที่มีอิทธิพลต่อวงในประเทศเหล่านี้ วงอื่นๆของอังกฤษเช่น Disorder, Varukers, Chaos uk และวงจากอเมริกาอย่าง Poison idea, Crucifix ก็มีบทบาทอย่างมาก แต่ในที่นี้จะพูดถึงอิทธิพลของวง Discharge เพียงอย่างเดียว เพราะอิทธิพลของ Discahreg นั้นสามารถเห็นได้ชัดเจนจากซาวนด์ดนตรีและภาพลักษณ์ที่ชัดเจน

อิทธิพลของ Discharge ที่ส่งผลต่อวงการดนตรีฮาร์ดคอร์พั้งในประเทศสวีเดนนั้น ทำให้แวดวงดนตรีในสวีเดนตอบรับมันและนำมาพัฒนาเป็นแนวทางของตนเอง ดนตรีของสวีเดนนั้นซาวนด์ค่อนข้างจะรกดิบเช่นวง Anti Cimex, Shitlickers, Mob 47, Moderat Likvidation ฯลฯ และวงเหล่านี้ก็ส่งผลให้กับวงดีบีทฮาร์ดคอร์ในรุ่นต่อมา


ส่วนฟินแลนด์นั้น วงอย่าง Kaaos, Bastard, Appendix, Tempera ss ต่างก็ประสบความสำเร็จในวงกว้าง ( แต่ไม่กว้างเท่าวงจากอังกฤษและอเมริกา ) เช่นเดียวกับที่ญี่ปุ่นวงอย่าง Confuse, Kuro, Gai G.I.S.M, Bastards วงดนตรีเหล่านี้มีซาวนด์ดนตรีที่ละม้ายคล้ายคลึงกับทางผั่งสวีเดน แต่ลักษณะเฉพาะตัวของวงจากญี่ปุ่นก็มีเช่นเดียวกัน วงอย่าง Confuse และ Gai นั้นเสียงร้องค่อนข้างกดต่ำแหบพร่า ส่วน G.I.S.M ก็มาพร้อมดนตรีฮาร์ดคอร์พั้งค์บวกกับกีต้าร์โซโล่ไสตล์เฮฟวี่ ( เพราะว่า Randy Uchida มือกีต้าร์ของวงนั้นมาแนวเฮฟวี่เลยทั้งสไตล์การเล่นกีต้าร์และการแต่งตัว ) เป็นแนวดนตรีพั้งค์ที่แตกต่างจากวงทั่วไปค่อนข้างมาก และได้ใจฝรั่งตาน้ำข้าวไปเต็มๆ ส่วนวงจากทางแถบประเทศบราซิลนั้นก็ไม่ได้น้อยหน้าเพียงแต่ว่าวงที่เป็นที่รู้จักในวงกว้างนั้นมีจำนวนไม่มากนัก

ต่อมาแวดวงพั้งค์จากทางสแกนดิเนเวีย, ญี่ปุ่น และบราซิลนั้นก็ได้นำเอาดนตรีของ Discharge มาพัฒนาสู่ดนตรีในแบบฉบับที่เรียกว่า D-beat ต่อไป





ดนตรีดีบีทนั้นเริ่มปรากฏตัวมาจากยุคไหนนั้น คาดว่าน่าจะเริ่มต้นขึ้นในราวต้นยุค 90’S จากการมาของวงอย่าง Disclose ( Master of D - Beat ) ด้วยภาพลักษ์ของวงที่เปรียบเสมือนเงาของ Discharge เลยทีเดียวไม่ว่าจะเป็นในส่วนของดนตรี ภาพลักษณ์ โลโก้หรือเนื้อหา ( เน้นเรื่องของสงคราม และนิวเคลียร์เพราะว่ายุคนั้นเป็นช่วงของปลายยุคสงครามเย็น ซึ่งผู้คนต่างก็หวาดผวากับภาวะตรึงเครียดกันของสองขั้วมหาอำนาจโลกทุนนิยมและโลกคอมมิวนิสต์ และหวาดกลัวว่าจะเกิดสงครามนิวเคลียร์ขึ้น ) บวกกับวงดนตรีหลาย ๆวงที่รับอิทธิพลมาจากวง Discharge ทั้งวงจากสวีเดนและญี่ปุ่นต่างก็นำเอารูปแบบอิทธิพลทางดนตรีจากวง Discharge นำมาใช้กับวงของตัวเอง ด้วยดนตรีที่สั้น บีทกลองแบบ Discharge สิ่งเหล่านี้ล้วนเป็นสิ่งที่บ่งบอกถึงแนวดนตรีในแบบดีบีทได้เป็นอย่างดี

วงดีบีทจากตอนต้นยุค 90 ‘S ตอนกลางยุค 90’S และปลายยุค 90’S จนถึงปี 2000 ที่เด่นๆก็มีอาทิเช่น Disfear, Diskonto และการแตกสลายของ Anti Cimex ( King of sweden ) ก็ทำให้เกิดวงดีบีทชั้นดีอย่าง Driller Killer, Wolfpack ภายหลังเปลี่ยนมาเป็น Wolfbrigade วงญี่ปุ่นอย่าง Disclose, Final Blood Bath, Framtid และจากบราซิล Besthoven และวงจากทั่วทุกมุมโลกอีกเป็นร้อยๆวงต่างก็ได้รับเอาอิทธิพลมาจากวง Disclose อีกต่อนึง กลายเป็นภาพลักษณ์ของดีบีทในเรื่องของโลโก้วงซึ่งถอดแบบมาจากวง Discharge

สวัสติกะ นาซี คืออะไร ?

ผมได้เห็นผู้คนที่สวมใส่สัญลักษณ์ของลัทธินาซี สวัสติกะ กันอยู่เป็นประจำในทวีปเอเชีย ผมไม่เข้าใจและผมก็สงสัยว่า ประชาชนที่สวมใส่สิ่งเหล่านี้นั้นเขาเข้าใจหรือเปล่าว่ามันคืออะไร ? และหมายถึงอะไร ?


ต้นฉบับของเครื่องหมายสวัสติกะนี้ ได้ถือกำเนิดขึ้นในประเทศอินเดีย ซึ่งเป็นประเทศที่มีวัฒนธรรมต่าง ๆมากมาย และสามารถพบเห็นได้ทุกหนทุกแห่งในอินเดีย และตามสถานที่ที่สำคัญต่าง ๆในทวีปเอเชีย

ต้นกำเนิดของรูปแบบเครื่องหมายนี้ คือ ความสันติภาพ และความเจริญรุ่งเรือง โดยมีรากฐานมาจากโบสถ์ในศาสนาฮินดู และ ศาสนาพุทธ และอีกหลาย ๆประเทศที่มีร้านอาหารที่ให้บริการเกี่ยวกับอาหารประเภทมังสวิรัติ และอาหารของผู้ที่ถือ ลัทธิมังสวิรัติ


อย่างไรก็ตาม เครื่องหมายนี้มี 2 ลักษณะด้วยกัน อย่างแรกคือแบบที่ได้กล่าวมาแล้วข้างต้นนี้ ซิ่งเป็นแบบอย่างที่ดี แต่อีกอย่างที่เรากำลังจะกล่าวถึงนั้นกลับเป็นสิ่งที่ตรงกันข้ามกันอย่างยิ่ง


ยังมีผู้คนอีกมากในทวีปเอเชีย ที่ปัจจุบันนี้ยังนำเครื่องหมายสวัสดิกะ หรือเครื่องหมายนาซีมาใช้แสดงถึงความเป็นแฟชั่นคนฉลาดน้อยบางคนถึงกับคิดว่าเครื่องหมายนี้แสดงถึงความรุนแรงที่กำลังแผ่ขยายออกไป


เครื่องหมายนี้มีลักษณะเป็นรูปวงกลมสีขาวที่ล้อมรอบกากบาทสีแดงที่แขนทั้งสี่ด้านหักเป็นมุมฉาก ซึ่งมันก็คือ เครื่องหมายอย่างเป็นทางการของ พรรคนาซี และประเทศเยอรมันนี สมัยที่นาซีปกครองประเทศ ภายใต้การนำของ อด๊อป ฮิตเลอร์ ซึ่งอยู่ในช่วงระหว่างปี ค.ศ.1933 – 1945

รากฐานของลัทธินาซีมีความเชื่อที่ว่าชนชาติผิวขาวเหนือกว่าชนชาติอื่น ๆในโลกนี้ และโดยเฉพาะพวกชาวอารยัน ( ที่ไม่ใช่ชาวยิวคอเคเชี่ยน )


ลัทธินี้เป็นลัทธิเหยียดสีผิว ซึ่งคนนาซีมักจะคิดและมองว่า คนผิวดำ คนเอเชีย และชนชาติยิว จะมีร่างกายและสติปัญญาที่ด้อยกว่าพวกคนผิวขาว และระบบแนวความคิดนี้ ได้ทำลายและฆ่าล้างเผ่าพันธ์ชาวยิวไปแล้วกว่า 6,000,000 คน และอีก 4,000,000 คน จากชนชาติอื่นที่นาซีคิดว่าโง่และด้อยกว่าคนผิวขาว ทั้งชาวผิวดำ และคนเอเชีย

ดังนั้น มันจึงไม่น่าประหลาดใจเลยที่ทำไมมุมมองพวกลัทธินาซี และเครื่องหมายสวัสติกะ ถึงได้กลายเป็นหนึ่งในเครื่องหมายของความเกลียดชังมากที่สุดในประวัติศาสตร์ของมนุษยชาติ !!!


มันไม่ใช่แฟชั่น !!! และมันไม่ได้แสดงถึงความเข้มแข็ง แต่มันแสดงถึงความโง่ งี่เง่า !!!


นาซีต้องการฆ่าทุกคนที่ไม่ใช่คนผิวขาว !!!


ถ้าคุณใส่เครื่องหมายนี้ก็แสดงว่าคุณกำลังจะบอกคนทั่วไปว่าคุณเกลียดชนชาติยิว คนผิวดำ คนเอเชีย !!!


ซิ่งก็แสดงถึงว่าคุณเกลียดครอบครัวคุณ เพื่อนคุณ และตัวคุณเอง !!!

นี่เป็นบันทึกแห่งมิตรภาพของความเป็นเพื่อน แด่ผู้ที่มีการศึกษา กับผู้ที่ไม่ได้รับการศึกษาและผู้ไม่รู้ในการสวมใส่เสื้อผ้าที่มีเครื่องหมายนี้ หรือมีเครื่องหมายนี้ที่มอเตอร์ไซค์ , หมวกเหล็ก หรือรถยนต์ แต่ในสถานที่ทั่ว ๆ ไป เช่น ในนิวยอร์คที่ผมมานั้น ถ้าหากคุณสวมเครื่องหมายนาซี สวัสติกะ ในที่สาธารณะแบบนั้น มันไม่น่าที่จะแปลกใจหรือผิดปรกติเลย ที่คุณจะถูกทำร้ายบนถนนทางเดิน บางทีรถมอเตอร์ไซค์ และรถยนต์ของคุณ ก็จะถูกทำลายไปด้วย และก็จะไม่ได้รับความเห็นอกเห็นใจจากผู้อื่นกลับมาเลย

I often see people wearing the Nazi swastika here in Asia. I don’t understand…and I have to wonder if the people wearing it understand what it is and what it means.


The original swastika is a symbol which originated in India. It has its place in many cultures and can be seen throughout India, as well as much of the rest of Asia. It its original form, it is a symbol of peace and wellbeing. It can be found on Hindu and Buddhist temples and in many countries it signifies that a restaurant serves vegetarian and/or vegan food.


However, the one many people in Asia are presently using as some sort of fashion statement - black figure, sharp angles extending clockwise, usually set at an angle and enclosed in a white circle and red box - is the official emblem of
the Nazi party and Third Reich, which reigned in Germany under the leadership of Adolf Hitler from 1933 to 1945.


Nazism stood for the racial superiority of white people, or specifically, Aryans ( non - Jewish Caucasians ) and the eventual subjugation and even elimination of what Nazis considered “ inferior races. ” This doctrine formed out of a 19th century trend of scientific racism where many white people viewed all “ darker ” skinned races ( including Asians ) as physically and intellectually inferior.


Unfortunately, many people still believe such views. So, by wearing this symbol, you are telling people that you support a theory that not only considers YOU inferior, but also promotes the subjugation ( and eventual elimination ) of you, your family and your friends. 

Nazi ideology culminated in Europe during World War II when Germany and the Nazis seized control over most of Europe and systematically annihilated 6,000,000 Jews and at least 4,000,000 other peoples also considered to be “sub - humans.” So it is no surprise why at this point, the Nazi swastika has become one of the most hated symbols in the history of mankind. It isn’t cool. It isn’t tough. It’s IGNORANT!


This is a friendly note to educate you among the ignorant and uninformed who wear this symbol on your clothing or have it on your motorcycle, helmet, or car. But in most places, like NY where I come from, if you wore the Nazi swastika in public, it wouldn’t be unusual for you to be beaten in the street, probably have your motorcycle or car destroyed, and receive not an ounce of sympathy in return. – Josh, NYC


Commentary : Please copy this page. If you see someone wearing a Nazi swastika or someone who has one on their motorcycle, car or helmet… hand them a copy and walk away. Put it on their car or motorcycle and walk away. Fight ignorance with education!!! If that doesn’t work… well… your call…

แม้ว่ารากเง้าดั้งเดิมของ STRAIGHTEDGE ยังเป็นที่ถกเถียงอยู่ แต่หลายคนก็เห็นด้วยว่า มีเพียงวงดนตรียุคแรกๆเพียงไม่กี่วงเท่านั้นที่ยังคงยืนหยัดต่อการเป็น STRAIGHTEDGE


จนถึงปัจจุบัน STRAIGHTEDGE ในปัจจุบันเป็นที่รู้จักเพราะวงอย่าง EARTH CRISIS, SNAPECASE และ VICTORY RECORDS ทั้งที่จริงแล้ว STRAIGHTEDGE มีมาตั้งแต่เมื่อ 20 ปีก่อน !


STRAIGHTEDGE เกิดขึ้นเมื่อต้นยุด 80 ในวอชิงตัน ดีซี โดยวง The Teen Idles, The Untouchables, Minor Threat และ Stata of Alert ( ซึ่งเป็นวงแรกของ Henry Rollins ) แน่นอนว่า Ian Mackaye เป็นผู้บรรญัติคำว่า STRAIGHTEDGE รวมทั้งเขียนเพลง Out Of Step ที่มีเนื้อหาสรุปความเป็น STRAIGHTEDGE ได้เป็นอย่างดี


“....I don’t smoke, I don’t drink, I don’t fuck...at least I can fucking think !!! ”


แน่นอนว่าต่อมาเพลงนี้กลายเป็นความหมายและคำนิยามของ STRAIGHTEDGE ซึ่งถ้าหากคุณเรียกตัวเองว่า STRAIGHTEDGE คุณต้องไม่สูบบุหรี่ ไม่แตะต้องแอลกอฮอล์ทุกชนิด ไม่ใช้ยาเสพติดใด ๆรวมทั้งไม่สำส่อนทางเพศด้วย ( สำคัญมาก !! )


STRAIGHTEDGE ในความหมายที่ลึกซึ่งคือ การควบคุมตัวเองและการใช้ชีวิตอย่างมีสติ การมีความรับผิดชอบ การสร้างความสุขให้กับชีวิตโดยไม่จำเป็นต้องพึ่งสิ่งแปลกปลอมเหมือนกับใครอื่นๆ ซึ่ง แน่นอนว่าจะต้องมีวิถีชีวิตที่ต่างๆจากคนอื่นๆในวัยเดียวกัน


แล้วทำไมต้องมีอักษร X บนมือด้วย ?


เมื่อต้นทศวรรษ 80 หากคุณยังอายุต่ำกว่า 21 ( ซึ่งการดื่มแอลกอฮอล์เป็นเรื่องผิดกฏหมาย ) เจ้าของร้านเหล้าหรือคลับจะขีดตัว X ไว้บนหลังมือของคุณ เพื่อให้บาร์เทนเดอร์รู้ว่าเด็กคนนี้ห้ามเสิร์ฟเหล้าโดยเด็ดขาด เครื่องหมาย X จึงกลายเป็นสัญลักษณ์ของคนที่ไม่ได้ดื่มของมึนเมาแต่ยังคงมีความสุขกับคอนเสิร์ตหรือโชว์ใด ๆก็ตามโดยไม่จำเป็นต้องดื่ม


แต่ STRAIGHTEDGE ก็ไม่ได้เติบโตด้วยดีในนักในวอชิงตันดีซีเมื่อเทียบกับความเคลื่อนไหวในบอสตันที่มีวงดนตรีอย่าง SSD และ DYS ที่เคร่งครัดต่อการเป็น STRAIGHTEDGE และวงเหล่านี้ก็เป็นต้นแบบของ Youth of Today, Slapshot และ Judge รวมทั้งวงรุ่นหลังอย่าง Raid Green Rage และ Earth Crisis และวงอื่น ๆอีกมากมาย


แต่มันกลับกลายเป็นว่า STRAIGHTEDGE ของที่นี่เป็นความหลงตัวเอง และการเหยียบย่ำคนที่ไม่ได้เป็นด้วย ซึ่งแตกต่างจากสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นในวอชิงตันดิซีโดยสิ้นเชิง ฉันไม่เห็นด้วยกับสิ่งเหล่านี้ เพราะต่อมาเด็กๆที่ตามอย่างพวกบอสตันกลับพยายามผลักดันแนวคิดของตัวเองโดยใช้ความรุนแรงเป็นเครื่องตัดสิน


ที่จริงก็ดีอยู่หรอกที่เห็นเครื่องหมาย X บนหลังมือเด็กๆ แต่ในขณะเดียวกัน STRAIGHTEDGE ก็กำลังถูกทำลายลงด้วยการใช้ความรุนแรง เด็กบางคนกำลังทำในสิ่งที่ถูกต้องแต่กลับใช้วิธีที่ผิด


แม้ว่าในเพลง STRAIGHTEDGE ของ Minor Threat จะไม่ได้กล่าวถึงการอดอาหาร การไม่กินเนื้อสัตว์ แต่ 2 สิ่งนี้ก็ได้กลายมาเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของ STRAIGHTEDGE แสดงให้เห็นว่า การใช้ชีวิตในขั้นต่อไปก็คือการดำรงอยู่ด้วยความ บริสุทธิ์ ละเลิกจากสิ่งเสพติดทุกชนิด ไม่เบียดเบียนสัตว์โลก


แต่ ณ วันนี้การนำการเป็นมังสวิรัติและการเป็น STRAIGHTEDGE มารวมกันยังเป็นที่ถกเถียงกันอยู่ ผม ( จัสติน แบรนแนน ) เป็น STRAIGHTEDGE และมังสวิรัติมา 8 ปีแล้ว และไม่เคยเปลี่ยนแปลง


เด็กบางคนทำแล้วก็เลิก เด็กในนิวยอร์คส่วนใหญ่สูบบุหรี่ กินเหล้า ใช้ยาเสพติด แต่ซื้อเพลงของพวก STRAIGHTEDGE ไปฟัง


STRAIGHTEDGE ย่อมเป็นทางเลือกส่วนตัวของผมเอง ผมทำเพราะผมต้องการมีชีวิตอยู่ ไม่ได้รู้สึกว่าตัวเองดีเลิศกว่าใคร ผม ยังคงเป็นเพื่อนกับใครก็ตามที่ไม่ใช่ STRAIGHTEDGE ได้ สำหรับผมแล้วมันคือการเลือกสิ่งที่ดีให้กับชีวิตของตัวเอง ไม่เคยที่จะใช้เป็นเครื่องมือใน การดูถูกคนอื่น




STRAIGHTEDGE ดำเนินมาเกือบจะ 20 ปีแล้ว ผมว่ามันเป็นสิ่งที่สร้างสรรค์ เมื่อใดก็ตามที่เด็ก ๆฟังเพลงของ Minor Threat ,7 Seconds, Youth of Today, Bold , Judge ผมหวังเป็นอย่างยิ่งว่า พวกเขาจะได้อะไรมากว่าความไพเราะของดนตรีอย่างที่ผมได้รับ


STRAIGHTEDGE ไม่ได้เป็นเรื่องใหญ่สำหรับชีวิตของผมเลย มันเป็นเหมือนสิ่งที่เราทำเป็นประจำอย่าง ตื่นนอน อาบน้ำ เพียงรับรู้ว่า ตัวเองไม่ดื่มเหล้า ไม่สูบบุหรี่ ไม่ใช้ยาเสพติด ไม่สำส่อนทางเพศ เป็นธรรมชาติในตัวของผมเอง อย่างไรก็ตาม " อย่าปล่อยให้มโนคติกลายเป็นเอกลักษณ์ของคุณ เป็นตัวของตัวเองคือสิ่งที่สำคัญที่สุด "

Although the origin of straightedge is debatable, most people will agree that a few pioneer bands were undeniably responsible for laying the foundation for the movement that would follow. Straightedge today is mostly known by bands like Earth Crisis, Snapcase and Victory Records. But straightedge actually started about 20 years ago !!


Straightedge was born in the early 1980's in Washington, DC by bands such as The Teen Idles, The Untouchables, Minor Threat and State of Alert ( which was Henry Rollins' first band ). It was of course Ian MacKaye of Minor Threat who coined the term " Straightedge " and wrote the anthem song " Out of Step "
with the lyrics that soon became the manifesto for the movement:


"...I don't smoke, I don't drink, I don't fuck...at least I can fucking think !!!".


These lyrics became the motto and the definition for straightedge. If you called yourself straightedge it meant that you didn't smoke cigarettes, you didn't drink alcohol, you didn't do drugs and you didn't have promiscuous sex. 


Straightedge, in it's purest sense, meant having complete control over yourself and your life. It meant having a clear mind and being responsible. It also meant being able to have a good time and have fun without doing drugs and drinking beer like everyone else. Being straightedge meant being different from everyone else your age. The antithesis to the norm.


So you ask, why do straight edge kids draw X's on their hands? In the early 1980's if you were under 21 ( not allowed to drink alcohol by law in the USA ) club owners at hardcore shows would draw X's on your hands so the bartenders would know they weren't allowed to serve you alcohol. The X thing caught on and kids starting showing up to the shows with X's already drawn on to their hands to symbolize that they didn't drink, didn't want to and didn't need to drink to have a good time.


The movement that started in DC was much more passive and tolerant than what was going on in places like Boston at the time with bands like SSD and DYS. These bands took straight edge on a harder way. Bands like these laid the groundwork for Youth of Today, Slapshot and Judge and later bands like
Raid, Green Rage and Earth Crisis and more .


This take on straightedge was based more on self-pride and intolerance for those who weren't straightedge. The " hard-line " take was born from these bands. This incarnation of straightedge was very different from what was born in Washington, DC. I don't agree with the hard-line philosophy. Hard-line kids take straightedge to new levels of intolerance by enforcing their ideals by acts of violence. And even though I can appreciate the efforts of fanatics at times to get their message across,I think something as positive as straightedge is ruined when it is enforced and introduced by acts of violence. Some kids got into the right thing for the wrong reasons.


Although the song Straightedge didn't mention anything about a required diet, vegetarianism and veganism soon leeched onto straightedge and the two would eventually go hand in hand. Most kids today that are straightedge are also vegetarians or vegans. It was the obvious next step in a logical progression to live a completely pure lifestyle. Abstaining from drugs and alcohol and the consumption of animals. To this day the marriage of straightedge and vegetarianism/veganism is debated.


I went straightedge and vegetarian about 8 years ago and I've never looked back. I've seen kids come and go. A lot of people in New York City sold out straightedge and now drink and smoke and do drugs but I don't really care. My personal view on straightedge has always been a personal choice. I'm straightedge because thats how I want to live. I don't think I'm better than anyone else because of it and I don't care if other people are straightedge or not. That doesn't matter to me. I can still be friends with kids who aren't straightedge. To me, its a personal choice for the betterment of your life. I never used it as a way to put people down.


Straightedge has come a very long way since its birth nearly 20 years ago. I'm still straightedge and I still think its a very positive thing. When new kids get into hardcore and they pick up records by Minor Threat, 7 Seconds, Youth of Today, Bold and Judge hopefully they will find out more about it, like I did. Straightedge is a very small part of my life. To me its just another thing about me as a person. Just like I wake up everyday and take a shower, I know that I don't drink and I don't do drugs and thats that.Its second nature to me. Don't let your ideology become your identity. Be yourself, that’s what’s important and have fun !

ต้องจ่ายค่าปรับ 18 เหรียญให้กับรถเน่าๆเพราะไม่มีใบอนุญาต ต้องมานั่งกังวลว่าคืนนี้จะนอนที่ไหน การรับฟังว่าเมื่อคืนก่อนมีเด็กตั้ง 500 คนมาดู Hatebreed การไม่มีอะไรจะกินเพราะร้านปิด การไม่ได้อาบน้ำเพราะต้องประหยัดน้ำ และตื่นขึ้นมาอีกวันเพื่อผจญกับสิ่งเหล่านี้อีกครั้ง เพราะนี่คือสิ่งเดียวที่ทำให้คุณมีความสุข

มาพูดถึงทางด้านดนตรีของ HC/Punk ก่อนดีกว่า “ Hardcore ” ไม่ใช่เพื่อการค้า เป็นตัวของตัวเอง และวง HC ก็ไม่ใช่วงดนตรีที่คุณจะหาดูได้ตามรายการโทรทัศน์อย่าง Korn, Limp Bizkit หรือ Slipknot เพราะวงเหล่านั้นก็ไม่ได้เล่น HC ด้วยซ้ำ เป็นแค่อีกรูปแบบหนึ่งของ “ เมทัล ” ลองดูวงอย่าง Reversal of Man Coallesce Botch และอีกมากมาย ที่เป็น HC และมี DIY Ethics


พูดง่ายๆ ให้เพื่อนๆ ชาวไทยเข้าใจ ก็คือ HC ต้องเป็นตัวของตัวเอง ถ้าไปอยู่ในค่ายใหญ่ ๆ ก็ไม่ใช่แล้ว เป็นอิสระจากการถูกเปลี่ยนแปลงภาพพจน์ ซึ่งการไปอยู่ในค่ายใหญ่คุณต้องถูกเปลี่ยนแปลงอย่างแน่นอนไม่ทางใดก็ทางหนึ่ง มันไม่ใช่เพื่อการค้า ไม่ใช้แค่หวังทำยอดอัลบั้มสูงๆ ซึ่งพวก Slipknot, Limp Biskit, Korn ฯลฯ เน้นขาย” ของ ”อย่างสนุกสนานผ่านรายการโทรทัศน์ที่มีค่าโฆษณาแพงๆ

และ HC ก็คือ D.I.Y ซึ่งมันก็คือการทำอัลบั้มและสิ่งต่าง ๆด้วยตัวเอง ไม่อิงระบบที่คนอื่นทำๆกัน หรือแม้แต่การเย็บกางเกง 3 ส่วนเองนี่ก็ถือว่าเป็น DIY HC และ Punk คือสิ่งเดียวกัน

HC สำหรับผมแล้วเป็นอีกทางเลือกหนึ่งในการใช้ชีวิต การทำตามความรู้สึก การสดับดนตรีที่ไม่ได้ถูกยัดเยียดจากรายการโทรทัศน์ การได้รับรู้เรื่องราวที่ไม่ได้เผยแพร่ในสื่อใหญ่ๆ เช่น นักโทษการเมือง สิทธิสัตว์ การรุกรานชนกลุ่มน้อย เป็นต้น

คน “ ธรรมดา ” สามารถจัดคอนเสิร์ต ทำหนังสือ ออกอัลบั้มอย่างที่ต้องการได้ HC เป็นเครือข่ายของผู้คนที่สนใจในเรื่องเดียวกัน มีมุมมองคล้ายๆ กัน แล้วก็ไม่ใช่ว่า การเป็นนักดนตรีวง HC จะทำยังไงก็ได้ เพราะจริงๆ ไม่มีใครจ้างมาให้เล่นดนตรี แต่ควรจะขอบคุณคนดูที่ช่วยสนับสนุน ยังมีอะไรอีกมากมายที่จะพูดถึง…

คำจำกัดความที่ง่ายที่สุดคือ HC/Punk คือความรู้สึกและทัศนคติ ไม่ใช่รูปแบบของดนตรี เพราะดนตรีเป็นแค่เครื่องมือในการเผยแพร่ ” แก่นของ HC ” รวมถึง Zine ค่ายเพลง ผู้จัดจำหน่าย เวปไซต์ หนังสือ ฯลฯ HC คือการทำอะไรที่ต่างไปจากสิ่งที่โลกนี้เป็นอยู่ และดนตรีก็เป็นสื่อที่เข้าถึงคนได้ง่ายที่สุดโดยส่งสารไปได้หลายเรื่องราวอย่าง การเหยียดผิว, ความยากจน, เพศ, STRAIGHTEDGE หรือเรื่องทั่ว ๆไปในสังคม


ส่วนวงอย่าง Slipknot, Limp Bizkit, Korn, Deftones หรือวงขยะอื่น ๆนั้น พวกเขาได้ขายวิญญาณให้กับค่ายเพลงใหญ่ ๆไปแล้ว และนำคำว่า HC มาใช้เพื่อให้ขลัง ความจริงก็คือ วงเหล่านี้ไม่มีอุดมการณ์ มอมเมาคนในโลกนี้ และเป็นเหตุผลอันควรที่จะต่อต้าน และบอกทุกคนให้รู้ความจริงว่าแท้จริงแล้งวงเหล่านี้ เห็นแก่เงิน ไม่จริงใจ ตามกระแส HC คือความเคลื่อนไหวที่สร้างสรรค์ ที่คนทั่วโลก, วงดนตรี, ช่างภาพ, นักเขียนมาร่วมกันสนับสนุนซึ่งกันและกัน นี่แหละคือ HC ขอต้อนรับสู่ HC

Hardcore punk for me is a sort of refuge from the negativity/apathy/exclusiveness of mainstream society. It's relationships evolve from mutual trust, respect and understanding, kind of like having a family which understands you and supports you. Hardcore is also a lifestyle, which includes music, fashion, politics, and economics.

It is basically a subculture on its own. I once read in heart attack zine that with the diversity of interests and ideas in hardcore, there can never be any sort of " unity ". Unity can only exist in the frame of mutual respect and a rational discourse of these diversity of ideas.


So i don't think that it should be an exclusive club. Instead, it should be an open forum where one can be one self without discrimination. Any antagonism should be focused on real enemies rather than exhaust ourselves preaching to the converted about what is cool and what isn't.

HC/Punk is driving 11 hours in a hot, smelly, cramped piece of shit van; realizing the directions you've been following are almost totally useless; finally finding the place where the show is " supposed " to be happening; finding out the promoter bailed on the show and left it up to his friends to find a place for the show; getting to the place where the show is " actually " happening and it being a flophouse in the middle of the worst neighborhood in the state; unloading, setting up, and playing with no P.A. to 14 kids ( 10 of whom are in the other band );selling one t-shirt to a guy who only has 4 bucks and a $500 cell phone; packing up and reloading the van; getting paid $18 because there was no admission charge, just donations; finding out that this is where you are sleeping tonight; getting told that the night before, 500 kids showed up to see hatebreed at the club where your show was originally booked; not eating because " everything is closed "; not showering because " its safer "; then, waking up at the crack of dawn to start the entire process over again, because it is the only thing that truly makes you happy.

Let's talk about the musical side of HC/Punk. " Hardcore " is UNCOMMERCIAL, independent, DIY and hc bands are not those who you have seen on the TV, like Korn, Limp Bizkit or Slipknot. These bands do not even play HC music.

They are sort of " metal ". Check out bands like Reversal of Man, Coalesce, Botch and many more. They're hardcore as fuck with DIY ethics. To summerize my 'what is hc all about' letter, i give you all my friends at Thailand this: HC should be independent ( being on major label is not independent anymore ), free from exploitation ( signing to major label means you will be exploited ), uncommercial ( Slipknot, Limp Biskit, Slayer, Korn do not fit this definition because they're always on tv shows, playing US$$$$ shows, etc ) and HC = DIY ( doing recordings on your own, minimizing the use of the mainstream system, even sewing your own 3/4 pant is DIY ). Also, HC and punk ( hc = punk ) is pretty much the same thing. Take care. Long live Thailand HC.

HC is for me an alternative way to live, to follow a passion, to listen to music that is not sold out by big TV bosses ( it's still a kind of expression and art ), to know more about topics that aren't big in mainstream mass media; like political prisoners, animal rights, exploited minorities... “ normal ” people can set up shows, do magazines, release records that they like personally, go on tour... it's a net of people of similar interests and points of view.

There is no, or should not be, “ I play in a band and I can act like shit ” people don't get really paid for being in a band, they can be thankful that there are some people who like to help... there is so much more to say.

The simplest definition – even though NOTHING about hardcore/punk rock is simple due it being so based on feelings and an attitude – is just that…feelings and an attitude. Hardcore is not just a style of
music – music is just one of the mediums to promote hardcore ideology - other means include zines, labels, distributors, websites, books, etc.


Hardcore is about making a difference in the world you live in. Since music is such an easily accessible format to really reach into peoples lives and leave an impact, music is the largest hardcore medium with bands breaking out all over the world chanting and preaching about common themes such as racism,
poverty, gender, veganism, straightedge, and society in general.


When it comes to bands like Slipknot, Limp Bizkit, Korn, Deftones or any of that fucking garbage – they, or the major label they’ve signed their souls ( that being a question in itself ) to, apply the word “ hardcore ” just for marketing purposes because of the power of the word. Hardcore pride is an intense emotion. The fact that these bands can even fathom the idea that they can steal something this powerful and this close to countless numbers of people worldwide, is more then enough reason to ban, boycott and educate others to what these bands are truly about…money, gimmicks, insincere babble based on commercial and mainstream bullshit.


Hardcore is an active movement. It’s the foundation of a worldwide network of people, bands, photographers, writers who work their ass off to help others promote a message…this is what its about.
