1. OK. มาเริ่มกันเลย ช่วยเล่าให้ฟังหน่อย Himsa เป็นใครมาจากไหน ? ได้ยินมาว่าทางวงมีการเปลี่ยนแปลง line up ตั้งแต่ออกอัลบั้มชุด “ Ground Breaking Ceremony ” ตกลงตอนนี้สมาชิกร่วมวงมีใครกันบ้าง แล้วใครเล่นตำแหน่งอะไรบ้าง ?
- DEREK : เปลี่ยน line up เหรอ ? อ๋อ…ใช่ครับ คือ Himsa ฟอร์มวงกันช่วงปลายปี 1998 ก็มีผม ( Derek ), Mike, Brian, Aaron และก็ Christian
ผม ( Derek ), Mike กับ Brian ลาออกจากวงที่กำลังเล่นอยู่ตอนนั้น ( Trial ) เหตุผลเพราะพวกเราต้องการจะเล่นดนตรีที่มันมีความเป็นอิสระทางความคิด และไร้ขีดจำกัดมากกว่า เราชวน Aaron มาเล่นกีตาร์ด้วย จากนั้นก็เริ่มแต่งเพลงกัน
แต่งไปได้สัก 10 เพลงก่อนที่ Christian จะย้ายจาก Philidelphia แล้วมาเขียนเนื้อร้องของเพลงทั้งหมด Aaron ทำหน้าที่เป็น producer ให้เราได้เยี่ยมมาก เราอัด demo กันไป 3 เพลง เพื่อนำไปบรรจุในงาน Aaron’s artistic services เราได้นำงาน demo นี้ไปเสนอตามค่ายต่าง ๆ หลายค่าย ก่อนที่จะได้คำตอบรับจากทางค่าย Revelation พวกเขาชอบเพลงของเรามาก และเสนอให้เราเซ็นสัญญาทำเพลง โดยนำงาน demo ของเราไปออกเป็น CD EP 7” และในเดือนพฤศจิกายน ปี 1999 เราก็ได้ออกอัลบั้มเต็มซึ่งเป็นชุดล่าสุด คือ " Ground Breaking Ceremony "
ก่อนที่จะออกอัลบั้มนี้ เราได้มีโอกาสไปทัวร์แถบ West Coast ของอเมริการ่วมกับเพื่อน ๆ วง Countervail เพียงแค่ 2 อาทิตย์เท่านั้นเอง ช่วงเดือนตุลาคม ปี 99 เราคาดกันไว้ว่า พออัลบั้มเต็มเสร็จเรียบร้อยแล้ว เราจะวางตารางการทัวร์แรกของเราในอเมริกา
ระหว่างออกทัวร์เกิดอุบัติเหตุกับรถแวนของเราบนทาง freeway เพลาล้อดันหัก ล้อกลิ้งหลุดออกจากรถไปต่อไม่ได้ เลยทำให้พลาดการแสดงที่เหลือทั้งหมดหลังจากที่แสดงไปได้แค่ 2 งาน จากสถานการณ์ตึงเครียดในการทัวร์ครั้งนั้นทำให้ Aaron ออกจากวงไป เลยต้องหาคนมาแทนที่ ซึ่งเราก็ได้ EJ. มา เขาใช้เวลาเรียนรู้งานทุกอย่างของวงแค่อาทิตย์เดียว แถมยังเป็นมือกีตาร์ที่เก่งมากด้วย
สำหรับเราโอกาสยังมี ในช่วงเดือนมกราคม และกุมภาพันธ์ ปี 2000 วงอื่น ๆ เริ่มออกทัวร์อเมริกากัน เราเลยรีบคว้าโอกาสไปร่วมทัวร์กับวง Turmoil, Indecision และ Haste ด้วย แต่ทัวร์ครั้งนี้จัดออกมาไม่สมบูรณ์ คนดูให้การตอบรับไม่ดีนัก plan งานกันแย่ แถมไม่มีการสื่อสารงานที่ดีระหว่าง booking agent กับ วงดนตรี เลยกลายเป็นเพิ่มความกดดันให้นักดนตรีเข้าไปอีก
ทางวงเราก็กำลังมีปัญหากับ Christian อยู่ ซึ่ง Christian นี่เขามีปัญหากับทุก ๆเรื่อง เราแยกทางกันระหว่างการเดินทางไป East Coast ซึ่งเหลืออีกแค่ 2 อาทิตย์ก็จะไปถึงอยู่แล้ว เราเลยสิ้นสุดการทัวร์ในฐานะวง instrumental ซึ่งเสียงตอบรับที่ได้จากการเป็น instrumental band นี้ถือว่าเป็นสิ่งที่ดีที่สุดที่เราเคยได้รับมาจนถึงทุกวันนี้
การออกจากวงของ Christian ถือได้ว่าเป็นจุดหักเหของวงเลยทีเดียว เพราะทั้งเสียงร้องและสไตล์การแต่งเนื้อของเขาหาตัวจับได้ยาก แต่พอมานึกถึงเสียงตอบรับที่ได้มาหลังจากจบการทัวร์ในครั้งนั้นแล้ว เราจึงตัดสินใจเล่นกันต่อโดยไม่มีนักร้องนำ แต่วงก็จำเป็นต้องมีใครมายืนเป็น front man พอดี John Pettibone เพื่อนเก่าของเราเพิ่งจะกลับมาจาก NY และยังว่างจากงานเพลงอยู่ John สร้างชื่อเสียงในฐานะนักร้องนำให้กับ Undertow อยู่หลายปี และยังเป็น tour manager ให้กับ Ensign และ Sick of it All ด้วย เราก็เลยชักชวนถ้าเขาสนใจจะมาร้องให้ Himsa และเรามั่นใจว่าเขานี่แหละเหมาะสมกับวงที่สุดแล้ว
ทั้งหมดนั่นก็เป็นประวัติย่อ ๆ ของวงนะครับ ส่วน line up ปัจจุบันก็คือ ผมเล่นเบส, Brian เล่นกีตาร์และMike ตีกลอง แต่คิดว่าตอนทัวร์ Asia คงจะเพิ่ม line up โดยมี Chris LaPointe มาร้องนำ และ KC Johnson มาเล่นกีตาร์ด้วย
KC ได้มาร่วมวงเพราะว่าเขาสามารถออกทัวร์ได้ และที่สำคัญเขาเล่นกีตาร์ได้สะเด่ามากก..! Chris LaPointe ( จาก Mobile Destruction Unit ) เพื่อนสมัยเก่าแก่ที่เคยร่วมงานกันมาก่อน ตอนทำโปรเจควงดนตรีชื่อว่า The Hanuman Project ส่วน Brian, EJ กับ John ไม่สามารถมาร่วมทัวร์ Asia กับเราได้ เพราะ Brian กับ EJ 2 คนนี่ติดเรียนไม่มีเวลาจริง ๆ และ John ก็ต้องออกทัวร์อเมริกาและยุโรปกับเพื่อน ๆ วง Botch
2. เล่าให้เราฟังหน่อยซิว่าสมาชิกยุคปัจจุบันของ Himsa มีที่มาที่ไปกันยังไง แล้วแต่ละคนเคยอยู่วงอะไรกันมาบ้าง ?
- DEREK : ครับ Mike, Brian กับผม เคยอยู่กับ Trial มาก่อน แต่ก่อนหน้านั้นก็เคยเล่นอยู่กับอีก 2 - 3 วงแต่ไม่เคยมีงานเพลงออกมาเลย
ส่วน John ก็เคยอยู่กับ Undertow ซึ่งเป็นวงที่เยี่ยมมากในช่วงต้นยุค 90 พวกเขาออกทัวร์ทั้งในอเมริกาและยุโรป ส่วน EJ นี่เป็นน้องใหม่ครับ ยังไม่ค่อยมีใครรู้จักเขานัก แต่ไม่แน่อีก 2 - 3 ปีข้างหน้าเขาอาจจะเป็นที่รู้จักของแฟนเพลงมากขึ้น
3. คุณจะอธิบายแนวดนตรีของคุณยังไง ให้กับคนที่ไม่เคยฟังงานของ Himsa มาก่อน ?
- DEREK : ผมว่า Christian อธิบายมันได้ดีที่สุด เขาเคยกล่าวไว้ว่า “ เพลงของ Himsa เป็นเหมือนเสียงระหว่างสถานีวิทยุ 2 สถานี ซึ่งส่งทั้งคลื่นสงบและคลื่นรบกวนในเวลาเดียวกัน ” ผมว่าคำกล่าวนี้สามารถอธิบายแนวเพลงสมัยที่เขายังทำงานร่วมกับเราได้ดี
แต่ตอนนี้เพลงที่เราทำออกมาจะหนักหน่วงขึ้น ออกไปทาง metal เพราะเราได้รับอิทธิพลมาจากพวก death metal ซึ่งวงที่ชอบ ๆก็เป็นวงดนตรีหน้าใหม่ที่มาจาก Sweden แต่เรื่องแนวเพลงเนี่ยผมว่าให้คนฟังเค้าเป็นคนตัดสินเองดีกว่า
มันก็ยากเหมือนกันนะที่จะไปจัดประเภทว่าเป็นแนวนั้นแนวนี้ ตลกดีเหมือนกันเวลาอ่าน zine ต่าง ๆ ที่ลงบทวิจารณ์เรา เขาเอาเราไปเปรียบเทียบกับเพลงทุกแนวเลย ตอนเริ่มทำวงใหม่ ๆเราตั้งกฎง่าย ๆขึ้นมาข้อนึงว่า " ดนตรีไม่มีพรมแดน " แต่ถ้ามีใครมากำหนดแนวให้เรา และทุกคนในวงชอบและเห็นดีด้วย เราก็ถือเอาตามนั้น
จะว่าเราเห็นแก่ตัวก็ได้นะ เราเล่นดนตรีเพื่อตัวเราเอง ถ้ามีใครสนุกกับเพลงของเรา เราก็ยินดีที่จะเล่นเพื่อพวกเขา แต่คุณไม่รู้หรอก บางทีอาทิตย์หน้านี้พวกผมอาจจะเปลี่ยนแนวไปเล่นพวกเพลงเพื่อชีวิตก็ได้ !!!!!
4. คนไทยจะคุ้นกับคำว่า “ AHIMSA ” ( อหิงสา ) มากกว่า ทำไมคุณถึงเลือกที่จะใช้ชื่อวงว่า “ HIMSA ” ? มันมีความหมายยังไงต่อพวกคุณ ?
- DEREK : จริง ๆเราก็คุ้นเคยกับชื่อ Ahimsa ตั้งแต่ก่อนที่จะมาทำวงแล้ว พวกเรามานั่งคิดกันว่าอยากได้ชื่อวงอะไรก็ได้ที่มีความหมายตรงกันข้ามกับคำว่า Ahimsa ก็มีการทำรีเสิรช์กันนิดหน่อยแล้วในที่สุดชื่อ Himsa ก็ถูกบัญญัติขึ้นมา
สำหรับผมมันหมายถึง สิ่งที่แตกต่างในเวลาที่แตกต่าง ก็มีบางครั้งเหมือนกันนะที่ผมคิดว่ามีแต่เรื่องไม่ดีเกิดขึ้นกับวงเราเพราะดันใช้ชื่อนี้ แต่ตอนนี้ผมกลับภูมิใจกับมันแล้ว เพราะถึงแม้ชื่อวงจะมีความหมายในทางลบ แต่ไม่จำเป็นว่าจะต้องมองวงเราในด้านลบไปด้วย สำหรับผม มันเป็นวิธีที่จะนำโคลนจากก้นบึงของหลุมขึ้นมาดู พิจารณาถึงรายละเอียด เผื่อว่าในอนาคตมันอาจมีประโยชน์
5. วัยรุ่นไทยเพิ่งจะให้ความสนใจและรับรู้เกี่ยวกับ Straightedge อยากทราบว่าสมาชิกในวง Himsa นี่เป็น Straightedge กันหรือเปล่า ? จะเรียกตัวเองว่าเป็นวง Straightedge ได้ไหม ? คุณจะให้คำจำกัดความของ Straightedge ว่ายังไง ? และคุณคิดว่าการเป็น Straightedge ก็คือการเป็น HARDCORE หรือการเป็น HARDCORE ก็คือการเป็น Straightedge ใช่หรือไม่ ?
- DEREK : เราไม่ใช่วง Straightedge แต่พวกเราก็ยังคงเกี่ยวข้องกับ Straightedge อยู่ไม่ว่าจะเป็นแต่ก่อนหรือถึงตอนนี้ มันเป็นทางเลือกของการใช้ชีวิต คุณอาจจะใช้ชีวิตแบบพวก Straightedge แต่ถ้าคุณไม่รู้จักแวดวงดนตรีประเภทนี้ ก็ถือว่าคุณไม่ได้เป็น Straightedge
สำหรับผม ผมมี Lifestyle แบบ Straightedge โดยที่ผมไม่ได้มานั่งยึดติดกับวิถีอะไรมากมาย คำว่า Straightedge แค่ที่อเมริกานี่ก็ถูกตีความหมายกันออกไปหลายแง่มุม มันขึ้นอยู่กับคนด้วย ถ้าจะมองในแง่ลบว่า ไอ้พวกนี้มันรวมตัวกันเป็น Gang แล้วเที่ยวไปหาเรื่องเดือดร้อนให้ชาวบ้านเค้าก็ได้ หรือถ้าจะมองในแง่บวกก็คือ คนพวกนี้ใช้ชีวิตอย่างมีค่าแล้วยังสร้างสรรโลกให้ดีขึ้น
ก็แล้วแต่ใครจะมองยังไง ก็เพราะอย่างงี้แหละผมถึงไม่ยึดติดกับคำนี้ ผมเรียกตัวเองว่าเป็นพวก มังสะวิรัต ดีกว่าเพราะมันมีความหมายในตัวชัดเจนอยู่แล้วไม่ต้องตีความกันให้ยุ่งยาก เป็นไงเจ๋งม๊ะ ?
สำหรับเรื่องที่ว่า HARDCORE อยู่ไหน Straightedge อยู่นั่น มันก็คงจะเป็นอย่างงั้น โดยส่วนตัวผมแล้วคำจำกัดความของมันก็คือ ถ้าคุณเรียกตัวเองว่าเป็นพวก Straightedge คุณก็คือพวก HARDCORE ด้วย แต่ถ้าคุณต้องการทำตัวแบบ Straightedge เพื่อที่จะได้ชื่อว่ากูก็เป็น HARDCORE อย่างงี้มันไร้สาระ ผมว่าอยากจะเรียกตัวเองยังไงก็เรียกไปเถอะแล้วปล่อยให้คนอื่นเขาตัดสินกันเองว่าคุณเป็นยังไงอย่างนี้ดีกว่า
6. ได้ยินมาว่าคุณมาแถบเอเชียเมื่อปีที่แล้ว ไปประเทศไหนมาบ้าง, แล้วตอนมาเมืองไทยมาทำอะไร, ประทับใจอะไรบ้างหรือเปล่า ?
- DEREK : ตอนมาเมืองไทยผมกับเพื่อนได้ไปเที่ยวที่เกาะเสม็ดกัน แล้วก็ไปที่สะพานข้ามแม่น้ำแคว จังหวัดกาญจนบุรีด้วย ผมชอบเมืองไทยมาก ชอบในความเป็นเมืองที่เรียบง่าย ถ้ามีโอกาสผมจะกลับไปที่นั่นอีก และจะพาเพื่อนร่วมวงไปเที่ยวที่ ๆผมเคยไปด้วย
7. ทราบมาว่า Himsa มีแผนที่จะอยู่ที่เมืองไทยประมาณ 1 อาทิตย์ คุณวางแผนจะทำอะไร และจะไปเยี่ยมเยียนที่ไหนกันบ้าง ?
- DEREK : เรากำลังคิดอยู่เหมือนกันว่าจะต้องทำอะไรบ้างเมื่อไปถึงที่นั่นแล้ว กะว่าจะไปเกาะเสม็ดกันประมาณวันสองวัน ไป relax กันน่ะครับ หลังจากอ่อนล้าจากการทัวร์มากว่า 3 อาทิตย์ ก็ขอเที่ยวสบาย ๆ หยุดงานกันมั่งสัก 2 - 3 วัน หรือถ้าคุณจะแนะนำกิจกรรมอย่างอื่นที่จะทำให้เราผ่อนคลายกันได้ก็ดีครับ เรามีเวลาแค่ 4 วัน ก่อนที่จะต้องเดินทางไป ฮ่องกงและประเทศจีนต่อ
8. วง US Hardcore หลายวงเลือกที่จะไปทัวร์ยุโรปกัน มีส่วนน้อยที่จะมา Asia ถึงมาก็เลือกไปเฉพาะแต่ญี่ปุ่น นี่คือเรื่องจริง เหตุผลเพราะถ้ามาเล่นแถบ SE Asia นี่มันทำเงินได้น้อย เนื่องมาจากการเป็นประเทศที่มีภาวะเศรษฐกิจตกต่ำ แล้วอะไรทำให้คุณตัดสินใจเลือกที่จะมาทัวร์ใน SE Asia ล่ะ ?
- DEREK : พวกเขาคงเห็นถึงความพยายามของพวกเรา และคงอยากจะดูการแสดงของวงดนตรีจากต่างประเทศ ขอขอบคุณแฟนเพลงที่ผมได้เจอกันคราวก่อน พวกเค้าเยี่ยมมาก ผมตั้งใจว่าอยากจะเจอกับแฟนเพลงคนอื่น ๆ ด้วย ที่สามารถจะมาช่วยงานคอนเสริต์ของเราได้สัก 1 หรือ 2 งาน ตามเมืองต่าง ๆ ตลอดการทัวร์เอเชียของเรา
9. ทางต้นสังกัดของคุณ ( Revelation ) ได้ออกค่าใช้จ่ายในการทัวร์ให้หรือเปล่า ? ทาง Promoter ของประเทศที่คุณไปเค้าช่วยเรื่องค่าตั๋วเครื่องบินด้วยหรือไม่ ? และพอบอกได้หรือเปล่าว่าทัวร์ทั้งหมดนี่ต้องใช้ทุนเท่าไหร่และหาเงินมาจากไหน ?
- DEREK : ที่เราตัดสินใจจัดทัวร์คอนเสริ์ต เพราะเราแน่ใจแล้วว่าเราสามารถจัดได้ และคิดว่ามันเป็นเรื่องน่าตื่นเต้นมากที่จะได้ไปแสดงที่นั่น เด็ก ๆ ที่นี่อาจจะเริ่มเบื่อพวกวงอเมริกันหรือวงจากยุโรปกันแล้ว แต่ที่ Asia นี่กระแส HC/punk ยังแรงอยู่ สำหรับ Asia ที่นี่ยังสามารถกลายเป็นอะไรได้อีกหลายอย่างที่อเมริกากับยุโรปเป็นไม่ได้ ซึ่งอะไรที่ว่านั่น ก็คือสิ่งที่ผมได้เขียนบรรยายไว้แล้วในบทความข้างต้น
ส่วนเรื่องเงินที่นำมาจัดคอนเสริ์ตนั้น ทาง Revelation ไม่ได้เข้ามาช่วยเหลืออะไร เพราะค่ายไม่ได้จำหน่ายงานใน Asia อยู่แล้ว ฉะนั้นเขาถึงไม่ได้ support เรื่องทัวร์ให้เรา ผมเลยตระหนักว่าตัวผมนี่แหละที่ต้องเป็นนายทุนเอง เราหาเงินทุนของเรากันเอง บางคนในวงเก็บเงินเพื่อจะมาจัดคอนเสริ์ตนี้เป็นปี บางคนก็ไปกู้หนี้ยืมสินกันมา เราได้เงินจากการขาย T-shirt และ CD ด้วย ซึ่งค่าใช้จ่ายที่เราคำนวณได้อยู่ที่ประมาณ 8,500 เหรียญ แต่เราไม่ได้คาดหวังว่าจะทำเงินได้ขนาดนั้นหรอก และจำนวนเงินดังกล่าวนี่ยังไม่ได้รวมถึงค่าใช้จ่ายจิปาถะและค่าเช่าที่เราต้องจ่ายขณะออกเดินทางอีกเป็นเดือน แต่ถือว่าทั้งหมดที่เราลงทุนไปนั้น เราทำเพื่อเพื่อน ๆ และเพื่อประสบการณ์ที่เราคงไม่มีวันลืม
10. มีวงดนตรีใดบ้างที่คุณชื่นชอบอยู่ตอนนี้ ? แล้วอยากจะแนะนำวงไหนให้คนไทยได้รู้จักบ้าง ?
- DEREK : ตอนนี้ผมไม่ฟังอย่างอื่นเลยนอกจาก death metal โดยเฉพาะวง death จากสวีเดน ที่มีวงนับไม่ถ้วน เพราะเพลงแนวนี้มันซึมอยู่ในสายเลือดของชาว Swedish กันไปแล้ว !
ซึ่งวงที่ผมชอบ ๆ อยู่ก็มี : Soilwork, In Flames, Arch Enemy, Mashuggah, Darkane
และที่ควรไปหามาฟังอย่างวง Catharsis, Botch, Nevermore, Shadows Fall และ Undying ซึ่งคุณสามารถหาฟังงานของวงเหล่านี้ได้ ยกเว้นงานชุดใหม่ของ Catharsis ที่คงจะเป็นเรื่องแปลกถ้าคุณหาแผ่นนี้เจอ
11. วงการเพลงใต้ดินในเมืองไทยยังค่อนข้างเล็กมากถ้าเทียบกับประเทศเพื่อนบ้านอย่าง มาเลเซีย,สิงคโปร์ ฯลฯ ที่นี่ก็มีกลุ่มที่ชอบฟังเพลงแนวหนัก ๆ อยู่เยอะ แต่พวกเขาจะฟังกันแต่วง US ดัง ๆ ที่มาจากค่ายใหญ่ และเด็กส่วนใหญ่ดูเหมือนว่าสนใจแต่จะไปซื้อเสื้อ Limp Bizkit กันมากกว่าที่จะสนับสนุนวงในประเทศของตัวเอง คุณคิดยังไงกับเรื่องนี้ ? และอยากจะแนะนำอะไรให้กับเพื่อน ๆ ที่เขาอยากจะเห็นวงการเพลงในบ้านตัวเองเติบโตขึ้นบ้างหรือเปล่า ?
- DEREK : มีเด็กหลายคนยังมีความเข้าใจและเหมารวมว่าดนตรีหนัก ๆ ก็นี่เลย Limp Bizkit พวกเขาไม่ได้ฟังเพลง Hardcore อย่างที่เราฟัง
ก่อนอื่นพวกเขาสมควรที่จะได้รับคำชี้แนะ ผมคิดว่าคราวหน้าถ้าคุณเห็นใครใส่เสื้อ Limp Bizkit นะ ชวนเค้ามาดูคอนเสริต์งานหน้าด้วย ให้พวกเขาเข้ามาเรียนรู้ว่า HC จริง ๆ มันเป็นยังไง มันเป็นสังคม underground ที่มาจากกลุ่มคนที่เข้าใจ, สนับสนุนและสร้างสรรค์มันขึ้นมา จากระยะเวลา 16 ปีที่ผมข้องเกี่ยวอยู่ในวงการ HC/punk ผมสังเกตุว่าวงการเพลงเล็ก ๆ นี่แหล่ะดีที่สุดแล้ว ปล่อยให้มันเติบโตไปตามทางของมันเองดีกว่า
เท่าที่เห็น วงการยิ่งโตขึ้น แต่สปิริตและสำนึกในอุดมการณ์กลับถดถอย พยายามทำสิ่งที่คุณมีอยู่ให้ดีที่สุด ไม่ต้องไปเผยแพร่ความตั้งใจของเราให้กับคนที่เขาไม่ต้องการมันรับรู้หรอก ถ้าใครอยากจะเข้ามาร่วมด้วยเขาจะมาหาคุณเอง นี่แหละคือแนวทางที่จะทำให้สังคมนี้เข้มแข็ง
12. มีหัวข้อเรื่องเกี่ยวกับอะไรบ้างที่คุณมักจะหยิกยกมาพูดถึงในเพลง ? และคุณคิดว่าเพลงเหล่านั้นเป็นเรื่องที่เกี่ยวข้องเฉพาะแต่ในสังคมอเมริกันหรือเปล่า หรือมันเป็นสาระที่มีประโยชน์ต่อทั่วโลกในวงกว้างด้วย ?
- DEREK : เนื้อหาที่นำเสนอในเพลงของเราส่วนใหญ่จะเป็นเนื้อหาเฉพาะตัว ที่มีเรื่องของการเมืองแอบแฝงอยู่ด้วย พวกเราจะถนัดกับการสอดแทรกการเมืองลงไปในเนื้อเพลงอยู่แล้ว แต่เราก็จะมีแนวคิดต่อเรื่องการเมืองของใครของมัน ฉะนั้นเพลงจึงมีความหมายแตกต่างกันตามความเข้าใจของแต่ละคน
13. นอกจากเรื่องเพลงแล้ว การที่คุณได้มีโอกาสไปเยือนประเทศไทยและประเทศข้างเคียง มีอะไรที่ทำให้คุณประทับใจมากที่สุด ? แล้วมีอะไรบ้างที่คุณคิดว่าต้องปรับปรุงเปลี่ยนแปลง หรือพูดง่าย ๆ ก็คือ มีอะไรที่ทำให้คุณรู้สึกวิตกกังวลบ้างหรือเปล่า ?
- DEREK : ผมได้พูดถึงเรื่องนี้ไว้แล้วในบทความของผม ผมบอกได้เลยว่าวิถีชีวิตที่เรียบง่ายของคนในเอเชีย เป็นสิ่งที่น่าทึ่งมาก
แต่ตอนนี้ความเป็นพวกบริโภคนิยมอย่างในอเมริกานั้น เริ่มค่อย ๆ คืบคลานไปสู่ประเทศแถบเอเชียที่ผมได้ไปเยือนแล้ว ก็หวังว่ามันคงยังไม่ไปถึงจุดที่ในอเมริกากำลังเป็นอยู่ ผมยังไม่อยากจะเชื่อเลยว่าทุกวันนี้คนเราฟุ่มเฟือยอยู่กับการ shopping และใช้จ่ายเงินที่จะว่าไปแล้วพวกเขาไม่ได้เป็นเจ้าของมันด้วยซ้ำ พวกวัตถุนิยม ก็เป็นอีกอย่างหนึ่งที่ผมกำลังต่อต้านอยู่ทุกวันนี้
14. สุดท้ายนี้ มีหลายคนตื่นเต้นที่จะได้ไปชมคอนเสริต์ของคุณในวันที่ 29 ตุลาคม ที่จะถึงนี้ มีอะไรจะทิ้งท้าย หรือจะฝากอะไรเพิ่มเติมหรือเปล่า ?
- DEREK : ผมรอไม่ไหวแล้ว !! จริง ๆ ผมอยากจะเล่นมากกว่า 1 โชว์ แต่แค่นี้ก็ถือว่าโชคดีแล้วที่ Chris กับคุณช่วยกันจัดงานนี้ขึ้นมาได้ ขอขอบคุณที่ฟังผมโม้มาจนจบ และหวังว่า 29 ตุลาคมนี้ คงได้เจอเพื่อน ๆ ชาว Arise zine กันนะครับ !

Interview with Derek and Concert report at Bangkok Thailand

1. OK. Here we go. Who is HIMSA ? We heard there have been some line up changes since the release of “ Ground Breaking Ceremony ”, so who is in the band now and who plays what ?
- DEREK: Line up change ? Oh yes. Himsa started in late 98 with myself, Mike, Brian, Aaron and Christian. Me, Mike and Brian left the band we were playing with ( Trial ) because we wanted to play music that was uninhibited and had no boundaries.
We asked Aaron to play second guitar and we proceeded to write 10 songs before Christian moved from Philidelphia and wrote all the lyrics to those songs. Aaron hooked us up with a really good producer and we recorded our 3 song demo as a trade for Aaron's artistic services.
We sent those demos to many different record companies before we heard back from Revelation. They really liked it and offered us a record contract. We released the demo as a 7"/CD ep. In November of 1999 we released our current full - length record called " Ground Breaking Ceremony " Before the record came out we had only toured the West Coast of the US for a couple weeks with our friends Countervail. In October of 99, expecting to have a full length record in our hands already, we set out on our first US tour.
We missed all of our shows except for 2 and were forced to turn back after our van's axle broke and a wheel flew off while we were on the freeway. The tension of that tour forced Aaron to leave the band. When we regrouped at home we found Aaron's replacement, EJ.
EJ learned all our stuff in a week and is a great guitar player. The opportunity arose for another US tour in January and February of 2000. We jumped on the chance to tour with Turmoil, Indecision and Haste. The tour was less than perfect. Bad turn-outs, poor planning and no communication between the booking agent and the bands put more pressure on the bands than the cold weather. The band was having problems with Christian and Christian was having problems with everything. We parted ways while on the East Coast and with 2 weeks left to go, we finished the tour off as an instrumental band.
The response we received as an instrumental band was the best we've received to this day. Christian's departure was a pretty big blow to the band. His sound and lyrical style would be difficult to match. Because of the response we had at the end of the tour, we considered going on without a singer , but none of us could fill-in as a front man. Our long time friend John Pettibone had recently moved back from NY and was not pursuing any musical endeavors. John has built up a reputation over the years as singer for Undertow and as a tour manager for Ensign and Sick of it All.
We asked him if he would be interested in singing for Himsa and sure enough he fit the band's character like a glove. So there's a little history for ya! That's the current line-up. I play bass, Brian plays guitar and Mike plays drums. However, when we come to Asia the line-up will consist of Chris LaPointe singing, and KC Johnson playing guitar. KC was brought into the band because of his availability to tour and his hot guitar licks! Chris LaPointe ( Mobile Destruction Unit ) is a long time friend of ours who we have worked with on a project band called The Hanuman Project. Brian, EJ, and John will not be visiting Asia with us. Both Brian and EJ are in school and can't afford the time to go and John will be on a US tour and then a European tour with our friends Botch.
2. Give us some background on the current members of HIMSA. What other bands have you all been in ?
- DEREK: Well, I know I just covered a lot of ground in the last question, but Mike, Brian, and I were in Trial. We've all been in a couple bands before that, but we had never released anything before Trial. John used to be in Undertow and they had a pretty good following back in the early 90's. They toured the US and Europe. EJ is fresh. No one knows about him yet, but he'll be famous in another couple years.
3. How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard you before ?
- DEREK: I think Christian described it best when he said, " Himsa is the sound between two radio stations. It's both soothing and disturbing all at once. " I think that quote really applies to the stuff we recorded with him. Our new stuff is moving in more of a heavier, metal direction.
We are all influenced by death metal and really admire some of the newer metal bands coming out of Sweden. I like to just let people decide for themselves. When we tell people it's hard to classify our music they usually agree with us. It's fun to read reviews from zines because we've been compared to just about everything.
When we started the band, we set one simple rule - no musical boundaries. If someone brings an item to the table and we all like it and it works for everyone, we use it. We're pretty selfish when it comes to what we like, we play music for us and if others enjoy our sound then we're happy to play for them. But you never know, we could be playing country songs next week!
4. Thai people are used to the word " Ahimsa. " Why did you choose the name “ Himsa ” for your band? What does it mean to you ?
- DEREK: We were familiar with the term ahimsa before we started the band. We were thinking we wanted to name the band whatever the opposite of Ahimsa was. A little research was done and Himsa was born.
The name means different things to me at different times. Sometimes I think we're jinxed because of choosing that name and other times I'm quite proud of it. Because the name has a negative meaning doesn't mean we're negative people. For me, it's a way to bring up the sludge from the bottom of the pit and examine it's content for a positive change in the future.
- DEREK: We are not a straightedge band. We all have ties to straightedge whether it be in the past or present. It's a lifestyle choice. You can live the lifestyle of a straightedge person, but without the music scene you wouldn't be called straightedge. I get kind of touchy on this subject.
I live a straightedge lifestyle but I don't adhere to that label. The term straightedge, here in the US, has various meanings to different people. It can mean anything from you're in a gang and you're out to hurt people and their property to you're living a positive lifestyle to help change the world for the better. Because of this varying definition, I choose not to use the label.
I call myself a vegan because the definition of the word leaves less room for personal interpretation. Cool ? As for hardcore and straightedge going hand and hand ? It's always been like that. My personal definition is that if you call yourself a straightedge kid, you're also a hardcore kid, but you don't have to be straightedge to be a hardcore kid. It's all kind of silly, just call yourself whatever you want and let other people decide what you're all about. That's what is should come down to anyway.
6. We heard that you were in ASIA last year. What countries did you go to? What did you do when you were here in Thailand? What were your general impressions ?
- DEREK: While I was in Thailand my friend and I went to Ko Samet and to the Kanchanaburi province where the Bridge of the River Kwai is.
I really liked Thailand a lot and was very caught up in it's simplicity. I look forward to coming back and escorting my band mates to the places I visited last time.
7.We also heard that HIMSA is planning on staying in Thailand for about aweek.What are you going to do here ? Where are you planning on visiting ?
- DEREK : We are going to figure put what we want to do when we get there .We’ve talked about running down to Ko Samet for a few days because there is nothing to do there and it’s very relaxing. After traveling fir 3 weeks straight, it would be nice to take it easy and co nothing for a couple days.
I really think we’re going it need to do something like that . Can you suggest anything that we could do that would be less hectic ? We will only have 4 days there before we leave for Hong Kong and China.
8.A lot of US Hardcore bands tour Europe. Very Few make it to Asia and those that do usually only play Japan, Let’s face it, the reason is because there is little money to be made in South East Asia due to the bad state of the economy. So what made you decide to tour South East Asia ?
- DEREK : The kids are appreciative of the effort and enjoy seeing out of town bands. Thanks to the great kids I met no my last visit, I have managed to meet other great kids who can set us up with a show or two in different cities throughout Asia.
9.Is your label (Revelation) paying for any of the tour ? Are promotors in any country helping you with fight costs ? How much is the whole tour going to cost ? Where is the money coming from ?
- DEREK : We are coming over because we have the ability to do so and because we thing it would be exciting to play show there.Kids have grown bored with bands in the US and Europe.Asia is still young in it's PUNK/HARDCORE life.
Asia has the ability to become simething that the US and Europe haven't. That's a lot of what my above article is about. Revelation is not helping us financially in any way. They do not sell many records in Asia and therefore don't give us support for such a tour.
This makes complete sense to me as I am a business man myself. We are funding the trip all on our own. Some of us have been saving for this trip for the last year, others are going into debt to make this trip. We will sell T-shirts and CDs, but we don't expect to make anywhere near the $ 8,500 US that we will spend on the trip. That amount also doesn't cover our bills and rent while we are gone for the month. We're investing mostly in friends and an experience that we hope to never forget.
10. Who are some of your favorite bands now? Who would you recommend to us here in Thailand ?
- DEREK: I listen to nothing but Death Metal right now. Look into any death metal band from Sweden. I think there's something in the water there because those Swedish kids know their rock! Here's some bands that I like a lot; Soilwork, In Flames, Arch Enemy, Mashuggah, Darkane. Also check out; Catharsis, Botch, Nevermore, Shadows Fall, Undying. You should be able to find all those records except the new Catharsis which is amazing if you can find it.
11. The underground music scene here in Thailand is pretty small compared to some of the surrounding countries like Malaysia, Singapore, etc. There are a lot of kids who like hard and heavy stuff, but they only get to hear big label, US stuff. And most kids seem more interested in buying a Limpbizkit shirt than supporting local bands. What are your thoughts on this ? Any advice to give those of us here who would like to see the local scene grow ?
- DEREK: Many kids there only have access to Corporate heavy music like Limpbizkit. Most of them haven't heard hardcore as we know it. They just need an introduction usually.
I would think that the next time you see a kid with a Limpbizkit shirt on you should invite them to the next show. That's how kids get into hardcore. It's an underground community. Those who know and support the community make up the community. From my 16 years of being involved with punk and hardcore I've noticed that the smaller scenes are the best ones. Let your scene grow at its own pace. The larger scenes I've seen usually kill the spirit and there's no sense of community.
Try to make what you have the best without looking to spread your message to people who don't want to hear it. Those who want to be involved will find you and there is where the strength lies.
12. What are some of the issues you talk about in your songs ? Do you think those issues are American issues, or do they apply to the world at large ?
- DEREK: Our song topics are mostly personal, but have political undertones. We are all familiar with the political content of the lyrics, but most of us keep our politics to our selves. The songs have many different meanings to each of us.
13. Beyond music… You have been to Thailand and many of the surrounding countries. What were some of the things that impressed you the most? And what are some of the things that you think most need changing ? In other words, what bothered you the most or disturbed you the most ?
- DEREK: I think I got most of this one in my article. I must say that the simplicity that most Asian people live with is amazing. The amount of consumerism that the US sees is starting to creep into the thinking of most Asian countries that I visited. I hope that it doesn't reach the point that it has here.
I'm still in disbelief when I see people shopping everyday and spending money that they don't actually posses. Materialism is something I fight on a daily basis.
14. Well, that’s about it. A lot of people are excited to come and see you play on October 29th. Any last words ? Anything you’d like to add ?
- DEREK: I CAN'T WAIT! I wish we could play more than one show, but I think we are lucky that Chris and you are able to pull this one off. Thanks for listening to all my rants. I hope to meet everyone who reads this on Oct 29th !

มุมมองของอเมริกันต่อวงการ HARDCORE PUNK ในเอเชีย

ต่อไปนี้คือบทความที่ผมเขียนให้กับ zine ของเพื่อนที่ Hong Kong ก็บรรยายถึงความประทับใจของผมต่อ South East Asia และวงการเพลง underground ของที่นั่น ขออภัยอาจจะยาวไปนิด
- สวัสดีครับ ผม Derek Harn เป็นมือเบสอยู่กับวงจาก Seattle Washington ชื่อว่าวง HIMSA เมื่อเร็ว ๆ นี้ผมกับเพื่อนได้เดินทางไปเยือนแถบเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ ซึ่งเราก็มีโอกาสได้ไปฮ่องกง, อินโดนีเซีย, สิงคโปร์,ไทย และก็เวียดนาม
นอกจากเวียดนามแล้ว ที่อื่นที่เราไปส่วนใหญ่ก็พอจะหาแนว HC/PUNK เจออยู่บ้าง ผู้คนส่วนใหญ่ที่ผมได้พบเจอมาก็จริงใจและเป็นมิตรกันดี แล้วพวกเขาค่อนข้างที่จะห่วงเกี่ยวกับวงการเพลงบ้านเขาอยู่เหมือนกัน
ผมมีโอกาสได้ดูแค่ show เดียวที่ฮ่องกง แต่พลาดไปไม่ทัน show ที่ Bandung, อินโดนีเซียแค่วันเดียว ได้ยินว่ามีคนดูแห่กันมาตั้ง 3,000 คนแน่ะ ! ขนาดเป็นแค่ show ในท้องถิ่นนะเนี่ย ก็แปลกดี
ตอนนี้ผมกำลังพยายามเชื่อมโยงวงการเพลง underground และเขียนถึงแวดวงชาว HC/punk ของทุก ๆ ที่ ๆ เราได้ไปเยือน โดยเฉพาะในเอเชียนี่ มีแต่คนที่มีความทะยานอยากและตื่นตัวที่จะคุยเกี่ยวกับเรื่องนี้ สำหรับเพื่อนใหม่นะครับ ขอฝากว่าตอนนี้ผมกำลังวางตารางการทัวร์เอเชียของ Himsa อยู่ ก็คงจะเริ่มในราวเดือนตุลาคมนี้
ผมอยากจะพูดถึงการใช้ internet มันก็เป็นวิธีที่ดีนะ ผมสามารถ connect หาผู้คนที่ผมไม่เคยรู้จักหรือเคยเจอกันมาก่อน หลังจากใช้ internet ติดต่อระหว่างกันได้ซักพักนึง ต่อมาได้มีโอกาสเจอหน้ากันมันเลยรู้สึกเหมือนว่าเราเป็นเพื่อนสนิทกันมาก่อนแล้ว
นี่ผมไม่ได้โฆษณาชวนเชื่อให้ใช้ internet นะ แต่ต่อไปผมว่ามันไม่เวิร์คเลยที่จะมาเสียเงินเสียเวลาไปกับการนั่งส่งจดหมาย อย่างทุก ๆ ที่ ๆ เราไปจะมี internet cafe ผมอยากแนะนำคุณว่าถ้าไปที่นั่น หาเพื่อนใหม่ ๆ และ connect หาคนอื่น ๆ ที่อยู่ในพื้นที่เดียวกัน ผมทราบว่าหลายคนขัดสนเรื่องเงิน แต่เราใช้มันให้เป็นประโยชน์ หาเพื่อนที่เป็นเจ้าของร้าน internet แล้วใช้เครื่องของเขา หาทางติดต่อกันเป็นเครือข่ายระหว่างกลุ่ม HC/punk กลุ่มต่าง ๆ สำหรับที่นั่นแล้ว internet เป็นวิธีสื่อสารที่ประหยัดสุดแล้ว
สัญญาณเตือนภัยอีกอย่างที่สำคัญสำหรับ Asia ก็คืออิทธิพลจากวัฒนธรรมอเมริกันที่กำลังเข้ามาคุกคาม ทั้ง MTV, McDonald, Nike รวมถึง Korn พวกนี้มันไม่ใช่สังคม underground แต่มันเป็นตัวทำลายล้าง สูญเงินให้กับสิ่งเหล่านี้ก็เหมือนกับทำลายชีวิต, จิตวิญญาณและทรัพยากรโลก
แต่ดูเหมือนว่าปัญหานี้ที่เราพยายามแก้ไขอยู่ยังไม่สามารถทำให้เป็นจริงได้ที่นั่น ยกตัวอย่างเช่นเรื่องของการ recycle มีอยู่แค่หนเดียวล่ะมั้งช่วงที่เดินทาง ผมเห็นกระป๋องรีไซเคิล ( มีเรื่องตลกอีกคือ เราสังเกตุเห็นที่การรถไฟในอินโดนีเซีย เขานำสัญลักษณ์ ที่เป็น Recycling symbol ของอเมริกามาเป็น logo แต่ในประเทศเขาเองกลับไม่มีระบบรีไซเคิลเลย ) ที่สหรัฐอเมริกาให้ความสำคัญมากกับการหมุนเวียนทรัพยากรมาใช้ใหม่ โดยได้รับการสนับสนุนเต็มที่จากนักเสรีนิยม ( รวมถึงกลุ่มนักอนุรักษ์ด้วย ) แล้วพอผมได้มารู้ว่าเมืองที่มีประชากรกว่า 6 ล้านคนนั่นไม่มีการรีไซเคิลสิ่งของกันเลย ผมแทบจะกระอั่กเลือด !!
รู้สึกเหมือนว่าผมเสียเวลาไปทำไมกับความพยายามรักษาโลกที่เหี่ยวแห้งใกล้ตายใบนี้ ควันพิษในหลาย ๆ เมืองที่เจอมันสุดแสนจะเลวร้าย ! ไม่อยากจะเชื่อเลยว่าเขาทนมีชีวิตอยู่กับมลพิษแบบนั้นกันได้ ถ้า Asia ตื่นตัวและมีความเคลื่อนไหวที่จะรณรงค์ในเรื่องนี้แล้วล่ะก็ ผมหวังว่ามันคงจะส่งผลโดยตรงต่อความเป็นมนุษย์ที่กำลังเสื่อมถอยอยู่บนโลกนี้ แล้วเราจะทำอะไรเพื่อช่วยเหลือมันได้บ้าง
OK. ก็พล่ามมาพอสมควรแล้ว ตอนนี้มาดูเรื่องทัวร์ Asia ของ Himsa กันบ้าง ก็พบปัญหาอุปสรรคมากมาย อย่างแรกเลย คนส่วนใหญ่ที่นั่นไม่สามารถซื้อ CD ของเราได้ เพราะแผ่น import ราคามันแพง ฉะนั้นวิธีเดียวที่คนจะได้ฟังงานของเรา หรือวงจากอเมริกาก็คือ หาฟังจากแผ่นผีที่ก็อปออกมาขาย ผมพยายามคุยกับทางค่ายให้เอาก็อปปี้งานของเราที่เป็นเทปกระจายไปวางแถบ SE Asia บ้าง แต่ถูกปฏิเสธเพราะทางค่ายกลัวว่าจะถูกเอาไปก็อปขายอีก ผมก็เข้าใจนะว่า พวกทำเทปผีพวกนี้สามารถ make money จากการหากินกับค่ายเพลงและศิลปินได้ในระยะยาว โดยที่ไม่ได้คำนึงว่าวงดนตรีจะเหน็ดเหนื่อยรากไส้กันขนาดไหนกว่าจะทำงานเสร็จออกมาสักชุด
สรุปแล้วเราจะหาคำตอบสำหรับเรื่องนี้ได้ยังไง ? ผมมีความคิดว่าถ้าเราสามารถมีงานเพลงเอาแบบเป็น release ของเราเองเพื่อไปวางที่นั่นโดยเฉพาะ น่าจะเป็นทางออกที่ดีที่สุด แต่ตอนนี้เราไม่มีทั้งเพลงที่จะเอาไปเสนอต้นสังกัดที่นั่นเลย และยังไม่รู้ด้วยซ้ำว่าที่นั่นจะมีสังกัดที่สามารถรองรับงานของเราได้หรือเปล่า
ค่าหัวของวง HC/punk จากอเมริกาและยุโรปมันสูงมาก แต่ผมมองว่ามันเป็นผลดีต่อวงการเพลงในเอเชียนะ เพราะมันเป็นแรงกระตุ้นให้มีการสร้างสรรค์วิถีทางใหม่ ๆ ในประเทศของคุณเอง บางทีคำตอบที่แท้จริงสำหรับปัญหานี้ก็คือ คุณต้องเริ่มสร้างระบบ underground ของคุณเอง อุดหนุนงานของวงที่พอจะหาเทปฟังได้ อย่าไปเอาอย่างพวกวงจากอเมริกาหรือยุโรปกันนักเลย ไม่จำเป็นก็ไม่ต้องไปซื้องานของวงพวกนี้ สนับสนุนวงการเพลงในบ้านของคุณเองเถอะ
แต่ถ้าคุณอยากจะฟังจริง ๆ อย่างงานของ Himsa ขอแนะนำว่าถ้าเพื่อนคุณมีก็ขอยืมเพื่อนมาอัดต่อ หรือไม่ก็ดาวน์โหลดเพลง sample จาก website ของเราก็ได้ แต่จำไว้เลยว่า อย่าไปซื้อเทปผี ! เพราะถือเป็นการทำร้ายศิลปินและค่ายอย่างยิ่ง
ผมรู้ว่ามันฟังดูทะแม่ง ๆ แทนที่ผมจะเชิญชวนให้คุณมาอุดหนุนงานของเรา แต่กลับไม่ต้องการขายอะไรให้กับคุณเลยขณะที่เราอยู่ที่นั่น ที่เราไป เราไปในฐานะฑูตของชาว HC/punk ไปเพื่อที่จะเล่นให้คนที่เขามีใจรักในเพลงแนวนี้จริง ๆ ได้ดูได้ฟังกัน ไม่ได้ไปขายเทป, ขาย image หรือขายความเป็น rock star งี่เง่า มันเป็นเรื่องของสังคมกับความพยายามที่จะเปลี่ยนแปลงสิ่งต่าง ๆ รอบตัวให้ดีขึ้นกว่าเก่า แค่การซื้อเทปไม่ได้ช่วยเปลี่ยนอะไรให้ดีขึ้นมาได้เลย
การได้อยู่ร่วมกันเป็นสังคม HC/punk แสดงให้เห็นถึงความเป็นอันหนึ่งอันเดียวกันของคนทั่วโลก ในสังคมนี้เราได้พบเจอเพื่อนใหม่, มีเครือข่ายในการติดต่อระหว่างกัน และร่วมมือกันปรับเปลี่ยนสังคมให้ดีขึ้นด้วย ( ควรริเริ่ม program รีไซเคิล กันได้แล้วเพื่อน ! ) ผมกับสมาชิกที่เหลือของ Himsa เฝ้ารอที่จะได้กลับไป และหวังว่าการกลับไปครั้งนี้จะได้รู้จักเพื่อนใหม่ ๆ เพิ่มขึ้นด้วย

AN AMERICAN VIEW ON ASIA HARDCORE PUNK

Here's an article I wrote for a friend's zine in Hong Kong. It will give you my impression of SE Asia and the underground music scene. Sorry if it's redundant.
- Hi ! My name is Derek Harn. I play bass for a band from Seattle Washington called HIMSA. Recently I visited parts of SE Asia with a friend of mine. We had the opportunity to visit Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Other than Vietnam, most of the places we visited had some sort of HardCore/punk scene.
Mostly, the people I met were honest and sincere and cared a lot about their scene or community. I only got to see one show in HK during my visit and I missed a show in Bandung, Indonesia by one day. I heard there were 3000 people in attendance at this local show! That amazes me.
Since my friend isn't really into hardcore I told him I would try to make the underground connection and write to other punk/HC people in the areas we were going to visit. I didn't have a problem finding eager and enthusiastic people to talk to in Asia. Through my new friends, I am now trying to set up a HIMSA Asia tour starting in October.
The use of the internet has it's rewards. I contacted people whom I'd never heard of or met before and through this form of technology we got to know each other well enough that we felt like long time friends when we finally did meet.
Now this isn't an internet advertisement, but the time and money I would have spent on mailed letters wouldn't have worked nearly as well. Every place we went had an internet cafe. I suggest that you go there and make some new friends and network with other people in your area. I realize that money is scarce for most of you, but be resourceful. Make friends with the cafe owners, use your friend's computers, just figure out a way to talk to each other and network with your surrounding HC/punk community.
The internet is one of the cheapest ways to do that there. One of the most alarming things about Asia is how American culture is simulated and looked up to there. MTV, McDonald's, Nike, and Korn are not icons of the underground communities here. They are oppressors and we don't give them our money to destroy lives, rain forests, and minds. It seems like the problems we work to fix here in the US aren't even realized there yet. Take recycling for example. Only once did I see a recycling can anywhere on the trip. ( On a funny note, we did notice that the train service in Indonesia uses the American recycling symbol as their logo, but they don't recycle either. )
There has been such a large scale push for renewable resources in America that it is fully supported by liberals (and conservatives because it sells). When I found out a city of 6 million people doesn't recycle a thing I was sick to my stomach! I feel like I'm wasting my time at home trying to conserve our dying planet.the smog in some of the cities was unbearable ! I couldn't believe people put up with that amount of pollution in their lives.If Asia had one movement to try to simulate,I it.OK,enough ot my ranting.Now,trying to set up show fot Himsa in Asia has posed many problems.
First off,most people can't afford to buy our CDs or records there because they cost too much after import.Making bootleg copies of our records seems to be the onlyway people will check out an American band.I tried to get copies of our records on tape from our label to send to parts of South East Asia,but they didn't want to send anything there because they didn't want to have it bootlegged.I can understand why,bootlegging costs the label and the band money in the long run and it doesn't representthe band's effort or hard work fairly,So what's the answer ?
I thought that we could just have own release put out there-that seems to be the best answer, but we don’t have any songs to offer anyone who could putout a release for us there not is there anyone who can afford to own a label to release it there .
The cost of American and European HC and Punk in SE Asia is too high, but I think this has had a positive effect on the community there at large because you are forced to create new avenues locally. Maybe the answer is to start your own underground system. Buy or trade for tapes that you can afford and forget about trying it replicate American and European bands. Support your local scene, don’t but US or European records. If you want to hear what a band like Himsa has to offer, copy it off a friend or download samples of our song at our website.
Remember that buying bootlegged copies hurts us and our label ! I know this sounds weird because I should be trying to sell my band as much as possible, but we don’t want to sell you anything while we are there .We are coming as ambassadors of punk and hardcore because we van afford to. We are coming there because we want to play for people who can appreciate punk/hardcore for what it represents. It’s not about selling records, an image, or even being pissed off. It’s about community and trying to change our surroundings for the betterment lf all.
Buying records doesn't chage a thing. So get involved, HC and Punk rawk seem to have the same effect on people all over the globe. It’s a great place to meet new people, network, and work together toward change ( and starting recycling programs ! ).I look forward to returning with the rest of Himsa and hope to make many new friends on my return. Keep an eye out for our show or go to our web site to see where we’re playing ( www.himsa.org ) . At the time of this writing we plan to visit Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, China, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. I hope you can come and we can make the H/C Punk community a little closer !!!

สวัสดีทุกคน ผม XYOSX เพื่อไม่เสียเวลา เราเริ่มกันเลยดีกว่า……….
งานแสดงครั้งนี้ถ้าไม่มี Chris ผู้ที่รู้จักวง Himsa เป็นอย่างดี เพื่อน ๆ ชาว HC คงไม่ได้มันส์อย่างนี้แน่ ๆ รวมทั้งผมด้วย ถ้าใครได้อ่าน Arise zine ฉบับ 2 ก็คงทราบว่า Derek ( มือเบส Himsa ) เคยมาเยี่ยมเยียนบ้านเราเมื่อปีที่แล้ว และก่อนกลับก็ได้บอกกล่าวเป็นนัย ๆ กับต้น ( เพื่อนที่สยามฯ ) ว่าอยากมาเล่นที่นี่สักโชว์หนึ่ง และเขาก็ไม่เสียคำพูดเสียด้วย !!!! ( น่านับถือจริง ๆ )
ก่อนที่ Himsa จะมาโชว์วันที่ 29 ตุลาคมที่ผ่านมา พวกเขาได้เล่นที่ ญี่ปุ่น, เกาหลี, อินโดนีเซีย, สิงค์โปร์, มาเลเซีย, และฟิลิปินส์ โดยเฉพาะฟิลิปินส์พวกเขาต้องเล่นกับวงท้องถิ่นถึง 12 วงด้วยกัน ซึ่งพวกเขาถูกให้เล่นเป็นวงสุดท้าย เลิกเมื่อตอนตีห้าของอีกวันหนึ่ง หลังจากนั้นก็นั่งเครื่องบินมากรุงเทพฯ ต่อ ( ทัวร์หฤโหดจริงโว้ยย )
เป็นธรรมดาที่ผมต้องไปต้อนรับเขาที่สนามบิน และรับไปโรงแรม หลั
งจากนั้นก็กินข้าวร่วมกันค่อนข้างลำบากสักนิดในตอนสั่ง เพราะบางคนในวงทานมังสวิรัติ โดยเฉพาะ Derek ทานมา สิบกว่าปีแล้ว นี่คงเป็นส่วนหนึ่งที่ทำให้บทเพลงของพวกเขาบางเพลง กล่าวถึงการรักษาอนุรักษ์สิ่งแวดล้อม การแอนตี้นิด ๆ กับพวกบ้าวัตถุนิยม และการเมือง !!
เที่ยงวันที่ 29 ก็มาถึง Rock Pub จนได้พร้อมกับทางวง บ่ายเศษ ๆ วงต่าง ๆ ที่มาแสดงงานนี้ก็ทยอยมากัน มีทั้ง พล่าน, อีโบลา, เควก และ K- 9 ( วงหลังนี้แขกพิเศษ ของสถานที่ )
วงเปิดวงแรกเริ่มด้วย K- 9 ( เรียกน้ำย่อย ) มากับบทเพลง Cover Red Hot Chili Paper อือมม… ทุกคนยังนิ่ง เพราะเพิ่งเริ่มต้น หลังจากนั้นเพลงต่าง ๆ ก็ถูกประเคนออกมาจนถึงเพลงสุดท้ายของ Limp Bizkits ( จำชื่อเพลงไม่ได้ ) เท่านั่นแหละ ผึ้งแตกรัง Moshhhh กันเต็มที่
วงต่อไปก็เป็นวงน้องใหม่ Quake ที่ไม่เคยแสดงที่ไหนมาก่อนเลย ( เปิดซิงครั้งแรก ) และเป็นวงที่พี่ธเนศ แห่งค่าย Justic Music หมายมั่นปั้นมือ เท่าที่ดูวง Quake น่าจับตามองต่อไปมาก เพราะน้อง ๆ เขาเล่นเพลงของตัวเอง โอ๊ะ !! ลืมบอกสมาชิกของวง ก็มีนักร้อง 2 คน ร้องนำโดย ไก่ วิทวัส และ แฮบ สิทธิกร ( เสียงโหดดี ) บอมบ์ เจษฎา กลอง, อ๊าต มานะศักดิ์ และ เนี้ยบ สุรพลน้อย ( ชอบชื่อจริง ๆ ) กีตาร์ และ เจ วันเฉลิม ( ไม่บำรุง ) เบส ถึงแม้ว่าน้อง ๆ จะเล่นครั้งแรกแต่ก็ไม่ทำให้ผิดหวัง 4 เพลงรวดและแถมเพลง Cover อีก 2 คือ เพลง LOCO กับ Surfacing ของ Slipknot อือมมม….ทำเอาเพื่อน ๆ น้ำแตกกันเป็นแถว ๆ
อันดับต่อไปก็พี่หลักฟ้าของเรา พล่าน ที่มาพร้อมกับสมาชิกใหม่ คือ นายไข่ ( จำชื่อจริงไม่ได้ ) เล่นเบส กับ โบ้ท ณัตถพงษ์ กีตาร์ ซึ่งมาแทนพี่จ่า ส่วนพี่โอ๋ยังคงรับหน้าที่กลองเหมือนเดิม ในงานนี้ เราก็ได้เห็นลีลาของพี่ฟ้าโขยกกีตาร์ในเพลงแรก ส่วนเพลงที่ 2 ก็มีพี่ต้น Dezember มาช่วยแจม และสิ่งที่ไม่คาดฝันก็เกิดขึ้น เมื่อพี่ฟ้า กระโดดลงมาให้ผู้ชมแบกร่างอันหนักอึ้ง เล่นเอาเหนื่อย เพราะผมเองก็ยืนอยู่แถวนั้นเหมือนกัน ( สงสัยต้องลดน้ำหนักกันหน่อยแล้ว ) วันนั้นพี่ฟ้า ก็ได้กล่าวอะไรเล็ก ๆ น้อย ๆ เกี่ยวกับวงการเพลงบ้านเรา ซึ่งพี่ฟ้าเองก็อยากให้พวกเราสนับสนุนวงบ้านเราให้มากที่สุด รวมถึงการสามัคคีกัน ไม่ว่าคุณจะฟังเพลงแนวไหน มันก็มาจากสาย Metal เหมือนกัน
ต่อไปก็ถึงหน้าที่ของวงขวัญใจวัยโจ๋ EBOLA นายเอ๋ไม่พูดพล่ามให้เสียเวลา แจกกล้วยคนดูไปหลายหวี ปลุกกำหนัดได้พอควร เพลงเก่าเพลงใหม่ จากชุด In My Hate งัดออกมาหมด รู้สึกว่าเพลงสุดท้ายมั่ง ที่มีนักร้องรับเชิญจากวง Cough นายเอก มาร่วมแหกปากด้วยอีกคน ผมเองยืนดูก็ทนไม่ไหว ออกไปโยกให้หายกระสันต์สักหน่อย กลัว ๆ อยู่เหมือนกันว่าเราและเพื่อน ๆ ในงานจะหมดแรงสะก่อน เพราะวงต่อไปพลาดไม่ได้เหมือนกัน เป็นที่น่ายินดีว่าทางวง EBOLA ได้อยู่ร่วมชายคาเดียวกันกับวงรุ่นพี่ พล่าน เป็นที่เรียบร้อย และคาดว่าต้นปีหน้าคงออกอัลบั้มใหม่แน่นอน เพื่อน ๆ ก็รอฟังผลงานและสนับสนุนเขาก็แล้วกัน
และแล้วเวลาที่ทุกคนรอคอยก็มาถึง Himsa ก็ขึ้นเวทีเตรียมทำลายโสตประสาทผู้ชม สมาชิกของวงประกอบไปด้วย Derek เบส, KC กีตาร์, Mike กลอง และ Chris ร้องนำ
ไม่พูดมากตามแบบฉบับ HC กระหน่ำเพลงเปิดด้วย Daylight Savings กับ The Great Depession ต่อจากนั้นถ้าจำไม่ผิดก็เป็นเพลง Another Version of The Twist แค่ 3 เพลงนี้ ผมและเพื่อนใน Rock Pub บ้าคลั่งกันสุดขีด Moshhhhhh กันกระจาย สนุกกันเต็มที่ในแบบฉบับ Real Hardcore
ต่อจากนั้น เพลงต่าง ๆ จากงานอัลบั้ม Ground Breaking Ceremony ก็ทยอยออกมา ไม่ว่าจะเป็นเพลง Carrier, Cremation, The Date is Here และก็มีเพลงจากชุด EP 2 เพลง คือ Black Out, Flood The Market พร้อมเพลง Cover 1 เพลงคือ Skull ของวง Misfits
1 ชั่วโมงเต็มกับ HC จากรัฐซีแอตเติ้ล อเมริกา ที่พกความตั้งใจที่จะมาทัวร์แถบเอเชียโดยเฉพาะ ซึ่งบางคนในวงก็ยืมเงินมากัน เก็บเงินกันเป็นปีเพื่อจะมาเล่น ถึงแม้ว่า Himsa จะไม่ใช่สมาชิกแท้ทั้งวง เพราะมือกีตาร์ และนักร้องตัวจริง ติดเรียน และทัวร์กับวงอื่นที่อเมริกา แต่ด้วยความที่สัญญากับพวกเราไว้แล้วว่าจะมา ก็ไม่อยากเสียคำพูด ( น่านับถือ ) งานนี้จึงเกิดขึ้น เพื่อให้เพื่อนชาว Metal / Hardcore บ้านเราได้ประจักษ์ถึงพลังที่แท้จริง ซึ่งถ้าใครได้ไปงานในวันนั้นและซื้อผลงาน เสื้อ โปสเตอร์ ก็ขอขอบคุณที่สนับสนุน เพราะหลาย ๆคนก็ตั้งใจที่จะให้มีงานดี ๆ แบบนี้ให้บ่อยมากยิ่งขึ้น
หลังจากนี้ต่อไปทางวง Himsa ก็จะไปบอกต่อวงต่าง ๆ ในอเมริกาว่า “ พวกคุณน่าจะไปทัวร์เอเชียบาง เพราะยังมีกลุ่ม HC ให้การตอบรับดี และเป็นกันเอง ” ไม่แน่ปีหน้าพวกเราคงจะได้ดูวง Hardcore ชั้นดีจากอเมริกากันอีกแน่นอน โปรดอดใจรอด้วยความระทึก แต่ที่สำคัญที่สุด !!! อย่าลืมสนับสนุนผลงาน Underground บ้านเราก่อนเป็นอันดับแรก

HIMSA LIVE IN BANGKOK THAILAND

On October 28th, HIMSA came to Bangkok in the middle of their Asian tour. I had met Derek Harn, bass player, last year when he and his friend Todd came to Asia to scout out countries and connect with people in the HC scene in Asia.
Derek and I kept in touch and I set up the show for them in Bangkok. After a fair amount of planning and set backs and date changes, a Sunday afternoon show was set up at a place called The Rock Pub here inBangkok. HIMSA would be playing with three local bands PLAHN, really good metal-with-a-message, EBOLA, hardcore with some rap influences, and QUAKE, a new band here in Bangkok that plays metal/hardcore crossover stuff. At the last minute, the club owner added another band called K-9. They are on a big label here and I am told usually play kind of pop stuff but they played crowd pleasing covers at this show… hmmmm. I wonder where their hearts are.
I was working the day HIMSA arrived so local scenesters, Yos, Ton and Bee went to the airport on Saturday night to meet them and take them out to a vegan dinner and set them up with a place to sleep. Khun Tum, the owner of Rock Pub, went with them and he was really helpful about getting the Himsa boys through customs without any problems and all of that.
The following day we all met up at the club. K-9 went on first and, as I said, played 6 or 7 crowd pleasers. QUAKE played next. This was their first live performance and they show a lot of promise. With a new school metal influenced hardcore sound, they ripped it up and if they keep at it and continue to search for their own sound and not be too influenced by US big name stuff, then they will be a welcome addition to the few underground bands here in Thailand that write and play their own music.
Next up was EBOLA. Kids here love this band and every time I have seen them play everybody goes nuts. This time was no different. EBOLA plays hardcore with metal and rap influences. They were joined by the singer of COUGH for a few songs as well. I like EBOLA a lot but sometimes it seems they are trying too hard to appropriate a sound from other big name bands… and they are good enough that they don’t need to. Personally, I could do without the rap parts and I think they are at their best when they are just doing their own hardcore/metal thing. Anyway, everybody went crazy.
After EBOLA came PLAHN who has gone through some serious line up changes since their last show. I have a lot of respect for this band because they don’t change their style to please people… they play the music that they love, which is full on, in your face metal with crunching rhythms, driving drums, guttural vocals and a message. Though kids here go crazy for the new MTV rap-core type stuff ( ala limpbusiness ), PLAHN goes on doing what they do: “ extreme metal ” as they describe it.
They don’t change their sound to fit the fashion of the moment. And so, though they say they are metal, I say they are the most hardcore band here in Thailand right now. They are also active in setting up shows here in Bangkok and Fah, the singer, is pretty vocal about his views on bands that play only cover songs. Anyway, having split with their old guitarist and bassist since the last time I saw them, I was eager to check out the new line up.
PLAHN was joined by Ton who is also the guitarist for a metal band here called DEZEMBER. And frontman Fah even picked up a guitar for the first couple of songs. The result was a short but excellent set. Everybody, including myself, went nuts and it seems clear that PLAHN has weathered the storm of line up changes and will be a force in the Thai underground for many years to come.
And then came HIMSA.Despite the fact that Motor, the drummer, was more than a little sick, HIMSA played an amazing set. They ripped out songs from both their EP and their full length as well as some newer material and in between songs they talked some about hardcore and what could and should be done here in Thailand. Unfortunately, because so few kids here speak English, very few understood what they were saying.
When Chris Lapointe, the singer, spoke out against corporate MTV music and told everyone in the crowd that they should “ BURN their Slpiknot and Limpbizkit T - shirts ” , half the kids only heard the words “ Slipknot ” and “ Limpbizkit ” and cheered because they thought that he was saying something good about these bands.
And when Derek talked about the scene here needing more support and involvement, a sense of community, most kids didn’t know what he was saying. But when they played the kids went crazy ! There was one moment where some fool in the crowd got a hold of a mic and was yelling indiscriminately into it. HIMSA had to stop playing and find the mic.
Getting up on stage and yelling the lyrics into the mic with the band is one thing. That kind of crowd participation has long been a part of hardcore. But yelling into a mic you have taken from the stage and hiding while you do it and disrupting a band that has come half way around the world at their own expense is just disrespectful and stupid! So to whoever that was ( we never found out who it was ) YOU ARE A JERK !
Next time learn the words or else just shut up. But this was just a short disruption and all in all, it was a good day for everybody who came, for the bands and for the Thai underground music scene. About 250 kids showed up and everybody had a great time.
HIMSA had a few days before they had to be in Hong Kong and I had a few days off from work, so we all went to a small island called Ko Samet which is a few hours East of Bangkok and spent some time relaxing on the beach and swimming in the ocean and all that good stuff. A couple days later, we returned to Bangkok and they visited some of the temples and other historical sights here. Then they headed out for Hong Kong and China.
