LACK INTERVIEW

บทนำ : ประมาณปีที่แล้ว มีสมาชิกของวงสุดยอดฮาร์ดคอร์จากเดนมาร์ค ชื่อ ALL I SEE มาเยี่ยมเยียนเมืองไทย ซึ่งผมก็มีโอกาสได้พบกับพวกเขาด้วย พวกเขาได้ให้แผ่นซีดีกับผม เป็นซีดีงาน DIY จากหลาย ๆ วงเดนมาร์คฮาร์ดคอร์ แบบให้มาฟัง…ไม่ได้ให้ไว้แจก…ที่เห็นก็เลยมีแค่แผ่นที่ใส่อยู่ในกระเป๋าใส่ซีดี ที่ไม่มีทั้งปกหรือกล่อง
หนึ่งในซีดีที่ผมได้มาคืองานของวง LACK พอผมกลับถึงบ้าน จับแผ่นนี้ยัดใส่เครื่องเล่น…กด play…เท่านั้นแหละ ซีดีแผ่นนี้ก็ไม่เคยห่างจากสเตอริโอของผมเลยตั้งแต่นั้น มันทั้งพลุ่งพล่าน, มีพลัง, เสียงร้องกดลงคอแทบฉีก, ท่วงทำนองบ้าคลั่งปะทุอารมณ์ และเนื้อหาที่ลุ่มลึก
หลังจากนั้นผมได้รับเมล์ปกซีดีมา ได้อ่านเนื้อเพลง แล้วก็เลยได้รู้ว่าพวกเขาก็มี web - site ของวงด้วย และจากที่เข้าไปเช็คข้อมูล ผมก็ได้เข้าใจถึงเนื้อหาและข้อมูลเพิ่มเติมเกี่ยวกับหลักจริยศาสตร์และแนวคิดทางการเมืองของพวกเขาด้วย ผมรู้ในทันทีเลยว่าผมต้องการสัมภาษณ์วงดนตรีวงนี้จริง ๆ แล้วในที่สุดผมก็ได้โอกาส เชิญอ่านกันได้เลย…..
1. OK. มาคุยกันถึงเรื่องวงก่อนเลยดีกว่า LACK ก่อตั้งวงกันมานานหรือยัง ? มีใครกันบ้าง ? และช่วยอธิบายถึง แนวดนตรีและแนวความคิดที่คุณนำเสนอผ่านบทเพลงของพวกคุณด้วย.
- สมาชิกของ LACK ก็มี Kasper, Jacob, Thomas และ Jakob การจะให้อธิบายถึงวงเป็นเรื่องยากเสมอแต่จะพยายามแล้วกันครับ
สมมุตว่าผมจินตนาการถึงห้อง 3 ห้อง : ในห้องแรก จะเต็มไปด้วยกิจกรรมแห่ง ความสับสนอลหม่าน สิ่งรบกวนและความยุ่งวุ่นวาย ที่เกิดจากการกระทำของกลุ่มคนพิลึก ๆ ที่อยู่ในชุดสีสว่างยืนถือวัตถุที่เป็นเหล็กขนาดใหญ่…
ในห้องที่สอง จะเห็นนักเปียโนที่ดูสุภาพอ่อนโยนกำลังบรรเลงเพลงที่ทำให้ท่วงทำนองและบรรยากาศนั้นเต็มไปด้วยมนต์สะกด…
ในห้องที่สาม คุณจะพบกลุ่มคนที่เสแสร้งตนเป็นนักกวี และพวก punk ในชุดเสื้อคอเต่าสีดำที่กำลังจดจ้องไปยังจุดซ่อนเร้นที่ไหนซักแห่ง บนขอบฟ้านอกหน้าต่างอย่างครุ่นคิดและตั้งใจ
แล้วทีนี้…ลองจินตนาการต่ออีกว่าคุณกำลังวิ่งสลับไปมาระหว่าง 3 ห้องนี้ โดยคุณจะต้องเผชิญหน้ากับกำแพงอิฐที่โผล่ขึ้นมาขวางทางอีก…แล้วในชั่วขณะ บทบาทที่จินตนาการทั้งหมดนั่นก็ถูกพังทลายโดยรถแทรกเตอร์เกลี่ยดิน…นี่แหละ LACK ( จริง ๆไม่ใช่รถเกลี่ยดินหรอก แค่เสียงเบสเท่านั้นเอง )
ส่วนเรื่องแนวความคิด - ถ้าเรามีแนวคิดหรือสิ่งที่อยากนำเสนอ สาระของมันก็คงจะเปลี่ยนไปตามวงจรชีวิตที่เปลี่ยนด้วย พูดรวม ๆแล้ว LACK ก็คือ ความพยายามที่จะปลดปล่อยตัวเองจากการมีชีวิตแบบชาวตะวันตก ( เราไม่รู้อย่างอื่นเลยนอกจากการใช้ชีวิตในตะวันตก )
มันจะเกี่ยวกับการไม่หลงเชื่อในสิ่งที่คนอื่นเขาบอกเล่ามา อะไรคือถูกอะไรคือผิด, ดี ชั่ว, สวย, น่าเกลียด, ถูกต้อง ผิดพลาด, ใครจะแสดงมันออกมาหรือไม่…มันเป็นชีวิตของเรา ความขัดแย้งที่เรามีต่อสังคมรอบกาย
จริง ๆ แล้ว เราแยกแยะไม่ออกหรอกระหว่างเรื่องส่วนตัวบุคคล, เรื่องการเมือง หรือเรื่องของอารมณ์ เราต้องอยู่ภายใต้วงจรของความเสื่อมถอยของอำนาจและความสิ้นหวัง จากการเฝ้าดูความโง่เขลาและความพยายามทำลายล้างของรัฐฯ ที่นำพาให้ชีวิตมันเส็งเคร็งและซ้ำซาก พวกเราไม่ใช่วงดนตรีอิงการเมือง ภายในวง พวกเรามักจะไม่ค่อยเห็นด้วยกับหลายอย่าง
เรามีห้องส่วนตัวของเราที่ต่างออกไป บางคนมุ่งไปที่เรื่องการเมือง บางคนมุ่งไปที่เรื่องส่วนบุคคลมากกว่า แน่นอนพวกเราไม่ได้มีแค่หัวเดียว มี 4 คน 4 ความเห็น นั่นคือเหตุผลว่าทำไมเราถึงได้พยายามหลีกหนีที่จะถูกเรียกว่า “ เป็นอย่างนั้น ” “ เป็นอย่างนี้ ”
2. หลาย ๆประเทศในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ ตื่นตัวกับวงการเพลงใต้ดินกันมาก อย่างเมืองไทยนี่จุดเริ่มต้น ของมันมาจากหลายกระแส เด็กหลายคนยังรู้แค่ว่า H/C ก็คือดนตรีเสียงดัง ๆ ที่เกรี้ยวกราด แล้วคำว่า H/C สำหรับพวกคุณมันมีความหมายยังไง ? นอกจากความดิบเถื่อนของดนตรีแล้ว อะไรเป็นสิ่งแรกที่ดึงดูดให้คุณสนใจ และคุณจะหลีกหนีจากการถูกเรียกว่าเป็นวงดนตรีอย่างงั้นได้ยังไง ?
- ก็ความดิบเถื่อนนี่แหละที่ดึงดูดใจในตอนแรก หรือบางทีคงเป็นเพราะมันเป็นสิ่งแปลกใหม่ สิ่งที่เราไม่เคยได้ยินได้ฟังมาก่อน
H/C คงเป็นคำ ๆ หนึ่งที่ทำให้คุณรู้สึกโคตรจะเหนื่อยหน่าย และช่างว่างเปล่าเหลือเกินที่พยายามจะไปให้คำจำกัดความมัน เพราะถ้าคุณพยามยามคิด จะกลายเป็นว่าคุณไปกำหนดกฎเกณฑ์หรือข้อจำกัดต่าง ๆ ให้กับมัน
ไม่แน่นะว่าวันนึง คุณอาจเจอตำรวจ H/C ที่กำลังปกป้องวงการจากเหล่าปีศาจร้าย หรือเห็นเด็ก ๆ กำลังทะเลาะวิวาท หรือต่อสู้กันว่า “ มึงเป็น H/C หรือมึงไม่ได้เป็นว่ะ ? ” ผมว่ามันน่าจะดีกว่าถ้าเราจะหาค่าของคำว่า H/C สิ่งที่มีคุณค่ามากที่สุด ก็คือ ความจริงที่ว่า H/C คือการได้อยู่ร่วมกันเป็นสังคม ได้รับโอกาสและความเป็นไปได้มากมายที่เราหาไม่ได้แล้วจากสังคมอื่น
อย่างแรก คุณได้ไปที่ต่าง ๆทั่วโลก, ได้ออกอัลบั้ม, ได้เขียนบทความลง Zine หรือได้ทำอะไรอีกหลายอย่าง ที่ไม่มีเรื่องของผลกำไรหรือธุรกิจมาเกี่ยวข้อง อย่างที่สอง บางทีมันก็เป็นเรื่องสำคัญกว่าที่คุณได้พบปะกับผู้คนอื่น และได้แลกเปลี่ยนความคิด หรือแชร์ไอเดียระหว่างกัน คุณจะมีวิวัฒนาการในการเลือกที่จะใช้ชีวิต ได้เก็บเกี่ยวประสบการณ์ต่าง ๆ ที่หาไม่ได้ในวงการ mainstream ( แล้ว mainstream มาเกี่ยวอะไรเนี่ย )
“ ฮาร์ดคอร์ ” ก็เหมือนเป็นสังคมหนึ่ง ที่สามารถให้อำนาจและสิทธิแก่เราในการทำสิ่งที่เราเชื่อมั่นไปตามครรลอง ให้เรารู้สึกถึงสัมผัสแห่งความอิสระเสรี และคงเป็นเพราะมันทำให้เรารู้สึกถึงการได้ทำงานร่วมกัน เพื่อบรรลุถึงเป้าหมายของความสำเร็จด้วย เราได้รับสิ่งดี ๆ จากการเป็น H/C ก็เพราะมันมีโอกาสที่ทำให้เราได้อยู่ ได้ทำในสิ่งที่เราฝัน
3. แล้วสถานะปัจจุบันของวงการเพลง H/C underground ในเดนมาร์กเป็นอย่างไรบ้าง ? เล็กหรือใหญ่ ? ไปได้ดีไหม หรือไม่ค่อยเวิร์คเท่าไหร่ ? แล้วมีผลบวก ผลลบอย่างไรบ้าง ?
- ตอนนี้ที่นี่วงการ Punk รู้สึกจะโตกว่า H/C นะ วง H/C ส่วนใหญ่ไม่ค่อยเหนียวแน่นแล้วก็จะแตกวงกันไป แต่ก็ยังมีบางวงที่ยังยืนหยัดอยู่ ซึ่งก็เป็นวงที่ดีทั้งนั้น
แต่ถึงยังไงวงการก็ยังคงเติบโตต่อไป มีวงเดนมาร์ก H/C punk เพิ่มขึ้นเรื่อย ๆ พร้อมทั้งการกระหน่ำทัวร์ และก็หมั่นออกอัลบั้ม มันก็ทำให้วงการดีขึ้น เรามีกลุ่มของเราที่มีชื่อว่า “ Ungdomshuset ” ( บ้านยุวชน ) ที่ถือได้ว่าเป็นศูนย์กลางที่สำคัญของวงการเลยทีเดียว ปกติที่นี่เคยเป็นที่จัดคอนเสริ์ต แต่โชคไม่ดีตอนนี้ไม่มีแล้ว เพราะโดนคุกคามโดยกลุ่มผู้ขับไล่
4. ในฐานะวงดนตรี หรือโดยส่วนตัวแต่ละคนแล้ว LACK ได้มีส่วนร่วมอะไรบ้าง ในการพยายามที่จะช่วยเหลือ หรือเสริมสร้างวงการเพลงที่นั้น ?
-พวกเราบางคนจัดโชว์คอนเสิร์ต บางคนก็ไปช่วยงานคนอื่น ก็พยายามที่จะมีส่วนช่วยเหลือเท่าที่จะทำได้ นอกเหนือจากการตระเวนเล่นคอนเสิร์ต เราก็ไม่ได้ทำอะไรมากนัก เห็นทีจะต้องมีส่วนร่วมมากกว่านี้แล้ว
5. ใน website ของคุณมีการพูดถึงเรื่องเพศด้วย เกี่ยวกับวัฒนธรรม บทบาทของชายและหญิง เท่าที่เห็น ดูเหมือนว่า H/C จะสะท้อนถึงสังคม mainstream ได้ดีทีเดียว วงดนตรีส่วนใหญ่จะมีแต่ผู้ชาย แฟนเพลงก็มีแต่ผู้ชาย ผู้หญิงน้อยคนที่จะไปดูคอนเสริ์ต ทำไมคุณถึงคิดว่าผู้หญิงไม่ค่อยมีส่วนร่วมในสังคม H/C ? ในเดนมาร์คนี่ก็เหมือนกันเหรอ ?
- เจอคำถามตอบยากอีกแล้ว มันก็พิจารณาได้หลายแง่นะ ในเดนมาร์คกลุ่ม H/C จะมีแต่เด็กผู้ชาย ในขณะที่กลุ่ม punk จะมีทั้งชายและหญิงปนกัน จงระวังไว้อย่าตกเป็นเหยื่อของผู้หญิง เราต้องการที่จะเปลี่ยนแปลงบทบาทของผู้ชายและผู้หญิง
บางทีผู้หญิงส่วนใหญ่อาจจะไม่รู้สึกสนใจ H/C สักเท่าไหร่ เพราะมันดูจะเป็นเรื่องของผู้ชายมากกว่า ไม่มีที่ว่างให้ผู้หญิงมากนัก แต่ก็อีกแหละ ที่ว่างไหนล่ะที่จะเหมาะสำหรับผู้หญิง ? ที่พูดไปว่า ที่สำหรับผู้ชาย หรือที่สำหรับผู้หญิงฟังดูออกจะเป็นการแบ่งแยกไปหรือเปล่า แต่มันก็จริง H/C มันเป็นเรื่องของพวกผู้ชายที่แสดงออกกันอย่างกักขฬะ ทั้งเหงื่อโทรมตัวและเสียงตะโกนโหวกเหวก ผู้ชายที่กำลังจ้องดูผู้ชายด้วยกัน มันดูจะเต็มไปด้วยความอีโรติค ระหว่างเพศเดียวกันในสังคม H/C
บางที H/C มันก็คงเป็นแค่สิ่งที่โคตรจะแปลกแยก, เป็นปรปักษ์ และช่างไม่น่าสนใจซะเลย ต่อผู้หญิงที่มองมันอย่างผิวเผิน บางทีพวกผู้ชายในสังคมนี้ก็ไม่ได้ปฏิบัติต่อผู้หญิงต่างไปจากพวกผู้ชายที่อยู่บาร์ข้าง ๆ สักเท่าไหร่ แต่ผมว่าบางทีเราควรเปลี่ยนวิสัยทัศน์ และมาวิเคราะห์กันดีกว่าว่า สังคม mainstream เค้าทำงานกันยังไง และมันจะเป็นจริงได้ไหมในสังคม H/C ………………...
6. วงการเพลงใต้ดินในประเทศไทยนี่ ยังเป็นแค่กลุ่มเล็ก ๆแต่ถ้าไปดูประเทศที่ติดกันอย่าง มาเลเซีย มีทั้งวงดนตรีและ Zine อีกเป็นโหล ซึ่งวงการบ้านเค้าดูมีชีวิตชีวาและมีความตื่นตัวใน DIY กันมาก รวมถึงใน สิงคโปร์, ฟิลิปปินส์, อินโดนีเซีย, ฯลฯ พวกคุณเคยทราบถึงเรื่องนี้ไหม ? เคยมาเยือนประเทศแถบนี้กันบ้างหรือเปล่า ? หรือเคยติดต่อกับวงดนตรี, zine หรือเด็ก ๆ ใน South East Asia บ้างไหม? แล้วเคยฟังเพลงใต้ดินจากประเทศอื่น ๆ บ้างหรือเปล่า ?
- ไม่เคยมีพวกเราคนไหนเลยที่เคยไป SEA เลยเราไม่รู้อะไรมากนักเกี่ยวกับที่นั่น ถ้าพูดถึง H/C เราก็เคยอ่านจาก zine หรือฟังบางวงมาบ้าง ก็พอรู้ว่าที่นั่นก็มีกลุ่มเหมือนกัน แต่ก็มักจะถูกครอบงำจากฝั่งตะวันตก ทั้งยุโรปและอเมริกา อย่างกับว่ายุคล่าอาณานิคมยังไม่จบสิ้น
เรารู้ถึงความเป็นไปในสหรัฐฯ แต่ไม่รู้อะไรเลยเกี่ยวกับความเป็นไปในโปแลนด์ ก็แค่เหน็บน่ะเพราะโปแลนด์อยู่ใกล้กว่า ก็ถ้าเป็นไปได้ เราก็อยากจะไปทัวร์หรือไปท่องเที่ยวแถบ SEA บ้าง แต่เราแทบจะไม่รู้อะไรเกี่ยวกับคนที่นั่นเลย
7. ตอนนี้ที่ประเทศไทย ถึงแม้ว่าวงการเพลงใต้ดินยังกลุ่มเล็กอยู่มาก แต่ผมสังเกตเห็นความแตกแยกมากขึ้นเรื่อย ๆ พวก H/C ก็ชอบกัดพวกเมทัล พวกเมทัลก็ชอบแควะพวก H/C ฯลฯ ไม่รู้ในเดนมาร์ค หรือในโชว์ของพวกคุณจะมีเรื่องแตกแยกอะไรประเภทนี้หรือเปล่า แล้วคุณมีความคิดเห็นยังไง กับการขีดเส้นแบ่งระหว่างสไตล์และรสนิยมของการฟังเพลงใต้ดิน ?
- วงการเพลงในเดนมาร์คที่นี่เล็กมาก ปกติแล้วก็ไม่ได้มีการตั้งกลุ่มอะไรที่จะไปเที่ยวไล่กัดกลุ่มอื่น บางทีเพลงพวก indie/college rock น่าจะเป็นประเภทเดียวที่ถูกหัวเราะเยาะมากกว่า แต่โดยรวมก็ไม่เห็นถึงความแตกแยกอะไรมาก
แบ่งแยกกันไปก็เหนื่อยเปล่าแถมไม่มีอะไรดีขึ้นมามันจะน่ากลัวขนาดไหนถ้าประเทศไทยไม่สามารถที่จะอยู่ร่วมกับแนวไหนได้เลย ไม่ทั้งเมทัลหรือ H/Cอาจไม่มีใครสนใจฟังพวกเค้า…หรือไม่แน่บางทีทุกคนอาจจะชอบเพราะพวกเขาทำอะไรที่แปลกใหม่ออกไปก็ได้ ใครจะรู้ ?
8. พวกคุณเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของ 4 วงดนตรีที่รวมตัวกันโดยใช้ชื่อว่า " ELEVATION " หนึ่งใน website ของคุณ ( น่าจะเป็นของ COMPLETE ) กล่าวไว้ว่า “ Elevation ไม่ใช่ค่ายเพลง มันเป็นเหมือนสัมพันธภาพที่เกื้อกูลกันระหว่างวงดนตรี 4 วง ” ช่วยเล่าให้ฟังหน่อยได้ไหมเกี่ยวกับ Elevation ตกลงมันคืออะไร, วงอื่น ๆ ที่มารวมตัว, เริ่มต้นกันมายังไง และมันมีส่วนช่วยเหลือคุณและวงอื่น ๆได้อย่างไร ?
- Elevation เกิดจากวงดนตรี 4 วงที่มารวมพลังและทำงานร่วมกันเพื่อทำให้สิ่งต่าง ๆ มันง่ายขึ้นสำหรับเรา แต่ละคนมีพรสวรรค์และทรัพยากรที่ต่างกัน ซึ่งเราพยายามดึงมันออกมาใช้ ปกติแล้ว LACK ไม่มีแอมป์กีตาร์เป็นของตัวเอง ดังนั้นเราก็เลยหยิบยืมเอาจากพวก Complete ( อีกหนึ่งวง H/C ในเดนมาร์ค ) และเราก็ยังมีฝ่ายที่คอยช่วยเหลือด้านเทคนิคในการทำ lay - out ให้กับแผ่นเสียง และโฮมเพจด้วย

ประวัติของ Elevation : ส่วนใหญ่พวกเราแต่ละคนจะรู้จักกันมาก่อนที่จะตัดสินใจมารวมตัวกัน พวกเรามีโอกาสได้แสดงร่วมกันบ้างและก็กลายเป็นเพื่อนกัน ก็เลยคิดว่าน่าจะทำอะไรอย่างอื่นที่ดีกว่าเอาแต่เตร็ดเตร่ เราน่าจะก่อตั้งวงเฉพาะกิจเพื่อช่วยเหลือระหว่างกันถ้าเป็นไปได้
ในทางทฤษฎีมันฟังดูเพอร์เฟ็คมาก แต่ในทางปฏิบัติมันไม่เป็นอย่างนั้นน่ะสิ เพราะบางคนก็กระตือรือร้นมากกว่าคนอื่น ซึ่งวงที่มารวมตัวกันก็มี Complete, Mole และก็ Joyphilter พวกเราแต่ละวงได้รับผลดีจากการนี้ในระดับผันแปรกันไป คือบางวงก็มี WebPages ของตัวเองที่สามารถใช้งานได้เลย หรือบางวงก็มีไอเดียใหม่ ๆ มานำเสนอ
มันก็บอกยากเหมือนกันว่าเราได้อะไรมากมายจากการรวมตัวกันนี้…โดยพื้นฐานแล้ว มันก็คือความคิดที่ว่าเราจะช่วยเหลือซึ่งกันและกันดีกว่าเราจะมาแข่งขันกัน จะเชื่อหรือไม่ก็ตาม แต่คงมีหลายคนที่คิดว่ามันเป็นความคิดที่ไม่ค่อยจะปกติเท่าไหร่

9. จากข้อมูลใน WebPage บอกไว้ว่าอัลบั้มเต็มของคุณที่กำลังจะคลอดเนี่ย อาจจะออกกับสังกัดเหล่านี้คือ EarthWaterSky Connection, Nova Recording และ Scene Police หมายถึงว่า Elevation ไม่มีความเคลื่อนไหวอะไรเลยเหรอ ? แล้วทำไมคุณถึงเลือกที่จะออกงานใหม่กับสังกัดเหล่านั้น ?
- ก็อย่างที่บอก Elevation ไม่ใช่ค่ายเพลง และมันก็ไม่เคยหยุดนิ่งด้วย จนถึงเดี๋ยวนี้เราเคยทำอัลบั้มออกขายกันเองครั้งนึง โดยได้รับเงินช่วยเหลือจาก Last Effort Zine และ On Display Zine แต่ทีนี้เราต้องการทำอัลบั้มเต็มและเราก็ไม่มีเงินทุน
นอกจากนั้นเราก็ไม่มีผู้จัดจำหน่ายให้ด้วย ที่สำคัญกว่านั้นก็คือเราต้องการจะลองทำอะไรใหม่ ๆ บ้าง สังกัด Nova recording, Scene Police Records และ EarthWaterSky Connection ล้วนแต่เป็นค่ายที่ทำงานกันอย่างฝีมือมาก น่าทึ่งและก็มีแต่คนดี ๆทั้งนั้น เรารู้สึกถูกชะตาแล้วก็อยากจะร่วมงานกับพวกเขามาก แล้วเราก็ชอบผลงานที่พวกเขาได้ออกมาก่อนหน้านี้ด้วย
10. ความหนักความดิบเถื่อนของดนตรีแนวนี้ กลายเป็นที่ชื่นชอบกันอย่างมากทุกวันนี้ วง Rap Metal อย่าง Limpbizkit และ Papa Roach ก็มีแพร่ภาพให้เห็นไปทั่วโลกทาง MTV หรือแม้แต่วง H/C อย่าง Earth Crisis และ Hatebreed หรือล่าสุด Refused นี่ก็ได้รับอิทธิพลจากสื่อ mainstream ที่แพร่กระจายไปทั่วโลกด้วย คุณคิดว่าสื่อที่กำลังสะพัดนี้มันช่วยเหลือ หรือทำร้าย วงการ H/C กันแน่ ?
- ก็คงตอบยาก มันมีความคิดดี ๆ ที่นำเสนอในเพลง H/C แต่คุณคงเข้าไม่ถึงหรอก จนกว่าคุณจะเข้ามาเรียนรู้มัน อย่างไรก็แล้วแต่ ความคิดดี ๆที่ว่านั่นก็ไม่ได้ถูกนำเสนอผ่านทาง MTV หรอก

LACK INTERVIEW

They had brought them to listen to… not to give away… so they were in a CD carrying case with no covers or inserts… just disks. One was by LACK. When I got home, I put it in my crappy old stereo and pressed play. That disk has been in my stereo on a regular basis ever since.
Driving, powerful, hardcore with throat ripping vocals, melodic madness, passionate and thoughtful lyrics. Some time later, I got the cover in the mail, read the lyrics and found that they had a web-site. After checking that out, reading their lyrics and finding out more about their diy ethic and politics, I knew I wanted to interview them. And so I did. And so here it is….
1. OK. Let’s talk about the band first. How long has LACK been together ? Who is LACK? How would you describe your music and your message ?
- Lack is Kasper, Jacob, Thomas and Jakob. Descriptions are always hard, but here is a try: Imagine three rooms.
In the first room there is an annoying, harsh, disturbing and generally hectic activity being performed by strange people in shiny suits holding large metal objects.
In the second room a gentle and fair piano player plays soft and hypnotizing melodies and atmospheres.
In the third room you find a bunch of pretentious poets and punks wearing black turtlenecks while staring thoughtfully and intensely at an obscure point somewhere beyond the horizon outside the window. Now, imagine yourself running rather confused between all three rooms only interrupted by a surprising encounter with a brick wall.
Once in a while the whole scenario gets crushed by a bulldozer. That is Lack, ( not the bulldozer that is just the bass ).
The message if there is a message or messages, then it/they change ( s ) as our lives change. But generally speaking, Lack is about trying to liberate oneself from the life one is living as a westerner ( we know of nothing else but how to live in the west ). It is about not believing all the things we are told: what is right and wrong, Good and Evil, ugly and beautiful, true or false, who runs the show and who doesn't. It's about our lives and our conflicts with the world around us. On all levels, we don't really distinguish between personal or political or emotional for that sake.
We deal with a lot of different issues from powerlessness and despair from watching idiots and governments destroy the world to the boredom of routine life. We are not a one-politics band. Internally in the band, we don't agree about everything we have room for differences. Some care more for the political aspects where some care about the personal ones. We don't have One opinion, we have four opinions. That is why we always tried to escape being labeled as 'this' or 'that'.
2. A lot of South East Asian countries have really active underground music scenes. Here in Thailand, however, things are really just starting in many ways. A lot of kids here know only that hardcore is loud and angry. What does the word “ hardcore ” mean to you ? Aside from loud aggressive music, what attracted you to hardcore in the beginning and what do you get out of being involved in it ?
- It was only the loud aggressive music that attracted us in the beginning – and perhaps that it was something new. Something we had never, ever heard before. " Hardcore " is one of those words that get so utterly tiring and empty while trying to define it. Because if you do so, you define a set of rules and regulations as well. Once you have these, you have a HC police guarding and saving the scene from evil.
You have ' kids ' quarrelling – perhaps fighting – about 'who is hardcore and who is not'. But with that said, we find it worthwhile to mention what we value in 'hardcore'. What we value most is the fact that hardcore is a community. It offers a lot of opportunities and possibilities that you don't really find many other places.
First, you can tour the world and release records and write zines and do things all without the high profit goal and corporate aspect. Secondly – perhaps more important- you can meet people and exchange ideas and share your thoughts. You can develop an alternative approach to living, you can experience moments that you could never find in the mainstream ( what is the mainstream by the way ? ). " Hardcore " – as a community - can be empowering because it can make it possible for you to do certain things your own way.
It can give you a sense of freedom. And it can be empowering because it offers a sense of working together to achieve certain goals. We benefited from hardcore because we have a chance to live out our dreams.
3. What is the current state of the hardcore/underground music scene in Denmark ? Small ? Large ? Active ? Apathetic ? What are the positives and what are the negatives ?
- The punk scene is larger than the hardcore scene up here. Most hardcore bands split up quickly. But still there are some bands. Most bands have been ok, though you could always tell what music they listened to. Still, the scene is growing, more and more Danish bands HC/punk bands are touring and more and more bands release records. It's getting better.
We have a squad called 'Ungdomshuset' (the house of youth), which is the primary center for the scene. This is where the shows usually take place. The place is threatened by eviction - unfortunately.
4. As a band, and as individuals, what part does LACK play in trying to contribute to or build on the scene there ?
- Some of us set up shows, some help out people as good as they can and just try to be a part of it all. Besides from playing a lot, we are not the most active. Sadly, we might add.
5. On your web site you talk a lot about issues of gender, traditional roles of men and women. As far as that goes, Hardcore seems to mirror mainstream society… at best. Most bands are all men, most fans are all men, few women go to shows, etc. Why do you think so few women get involved in hardcore ? Is it the same in Denmark ?
- This question is pretty hard to answer. There are many aspects to consider with this. In Denmark HC is a boys' club, whereas Punk is quite mixed m/f. Let's be careful not to victimize women – generally we need to change the role that men have played and the role that women have played.
Maybe a lot of women don't feel attracted to HC because it is such a male thing, there is not much room for women. then again: what is a women’s room? By saying that there exists such a thing as a boys room and a girls room we keep up the separation.
But, HC IS a lot of boys acting up, sweating and shouting at other guys dressed in the right clothes. Males watching males – there is a lot of homoerotics in HC. Maybe HC is just too damn alienating and hostile and uninteresting at first glance for women to get involved. The guys in hardcore probably don't treat women differently than the guys in the bar next-door do. But maybe we should change perspective and analyze how mainstream society works and how this manifests in HC. HC is after all only what you bring into it.
What patterns of separation, privilege, domination, inequality etc. operates in our worlds. How do they operate and why? How do we deal with them? Talking about equality and changing traditions is one thing. Doing it is something different. It is so much harder, because in reality things are so much harder. The things we'd like to change are so internal because we have been brought up with them.
Behavioral patterns are almost instinctive. It is not to say we shouldn't try to change things, on the contrary. It is to say that it is not simple. It takes a lot of efforts and awareness and attempts and will.
6. The underground music scene is really small here in Thailand, but just over the border in Malaysia there are dozens of bands and zines and a really vibrant and active DIY scene. There are also pretty big and active scenes in Singapore, The Philippines, Indonesia, etc. Where you aware of this ? Have you ever been to this part of the world ? Have you ever been in contact with any bands, zines, kids in South East Asia ? Have you ever heard any underground music out of this region ?
- None of us have ever been to South East Asia. Unfortunately. We do not know much about that part of the world when speaking of HC.
We have seen or read some zines and perhaps heard a few bands. But we know there is a scene. But as always it is (western) Europe and the US that dominate. The colonial era has still not ended. We know what goes on in the States, but we know nothing on what goes on in Poland. Ironic since Poland is closer. If we can afford it, we'd like to tour or to travel South East Asia, but we almost don't know any people. ( editor’s note: get in touch with them so they know some people here ! )
7. Right now, here in Thailand, even though the underground scene is still very young, I can already see schisms developing. The hardcore crowd is badmouthing the metal crowd. The metal crowd is badmouthing the hardcore crowd. Etc. Do you deal with these kinds of separations in Denmark and at your shows ? What are your thoughts on this kind of line drawing between styles and tastes in the underground music scene ?
- The scene in Denmark is so small that people simply don't form groups that are big enough to badmouth other groups. Perhaps Indie/college rock is the only genre that gets mocked.
But there is not that much separation in the scene. Luckily, since that is so tiring and unproductive. What a terror for a Thai kid not to be able to fit into any of the groups – metal nor HC- No one will listen to them…or maybe everyone will like them because they do something new. Who knows ?
8. You are part of a four band collective that you call “ ELEVATION. ” On one of your websites ( maybe COMPLETE’s ? ) it says, “ Elevation is not a record label. It is a symbiotic relationship between four bands.” Can you tell us a little more about ELEVATION, what it is, the other bands involved, how it started and how it’s helped you and the other bands.
- Elevation is 4 bands joining forces and collaborating in order to make things easier for us all. People have different talents and resources. We try to use them. Basically Lack still doesn't have any guitar amplifiers, so we usually borrow from Complete ( another hardcore band in Denmark ). We had a lot of technical assistance with the lay-out for our records and homepage.

The Elevation history: most people knew each other before we decided to bring it to life. We had played some shows together and were friends.
So we decided we could do more than just hang - out – we could form a collective and help each other when possible. In theory it is perfect, practically it is not – some people are more active than others. The other bands involved are Complete, Mole and Joyphilter – we all benefited in varying degrees from this.
Some bands suddenly had WebPages that actually worked and some bands had new ideas presented to them. It is hard to tell how much came from the collective…basically it is the idea that mutual help is better than competition. Believe it or not, but many people think this is an unusual idea.

9. On your WebPage it says that your upcoming full length will be released on the labels EarthWaterSkyConnection, Nova Recordings and Scene Police. Does this mean that Elevation is no longer active ? Why have you chosen to release your new CD on these labels ?
- Since Elevation is not a label, it never stopped being active. Until now we have released our records by ourselves – once with financial aid from Last Effort Zine and On Display Zine. But we wanted to do a full-length record and we didn't have the money.
Besides we didn't have all the necessary distribution. More important we wanted to try something new. Nova recordings, ScenePolice Records and EarthWaterSky Connection are all labels run by cool, amazing and kind people. We really like them and it feels right to work with them. Besides we like what they have released before.
10. Hard, aggressive music has become pretty popular these days. Rap metal bands like Limpbizkit and Papa Roach are on MTV all over the world every day. And even some hardcore bands like Earth Crisis and Hatebreed and the late Refused have gotten a fair amount of mainstream media attention worldwide. Do you think this kind of media exposure has helped or hurt hardcore ?
- It is hard to tell. There are good ideas in hardcore, but they rarely show until you've spent some time in hardcore. Somehow these ideas don't really show on MTV. How many people changed their lives or the world around them from listening to Rage Against The Machine – a band with a lot to say ?
Mainstream media usually produce entertainment and when hardcore becomes mainstream it usually becomes entertainment too. Entertainment is not dangerous and the greatest music is dangerous.
11. If given the opportunity, would you ever consider signing to a big major label ? Why or why not ?
- Sure we would consider it. But if we'd sign to a major label is another question. Besides, it depends on what you define as 'major label'. But we prefer music, not business.
12. A lot American and European bands make it to Japan, but very few make it to SE Asia. Any chance LACK or any of the other bands on ELEVATION will play in this part of the world sometime ?
- Maybe – hopefully, it depends – if we can afford it and if we can have enough shows that do not all get cancelled. We have two big tours ahead and after that we do not really know what will happen…
13. How can people in Asia get your releases and the other releases on ELEVATION ?
